Unknown Device in Device Manager

Hello.

Suddenly my Studio 1557 began giving me an error message that the driver of an Unknown USB Device couln´t be installed. The only USB device I have connected is a Microsoft USB mouse and is working properly and the driver is up to date.

1) If a I try to update the driver of this Unknown Device in My PC - Properties - Device Manager - USB Drivers, all I get is the message "The driver is up to date".

2) If I uninstall this Unknown Device and let Windows 7 find it and install it properly, I get the message: "The driver could not be installed".

The 3 USB ports are working just fine but I keep receiving the message of this Unknown Device any time I turn on the pc even any time I open the cover of my laptop.

My questions are:

1) What could be this USB Unknown Device?

2) How can I fix the problem?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Does the system have a fingerprint reader? Those are usually USB.  So too can memory card readers be USB.

Thanks Dallas for the referral to EJN63.

The pc does not have a fingerprint reader but it does have a memory card reader.

This memory card reader is not in the USB Drivers section in Device Manager, but in the ATA ATAPI IDE Drivers section with 3 lines:

1) Ricoh PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller

2) Ricoh PCIe SF/MMC Host Controller and

3) Ricoh PCIe xD Picture Card Controller.

I don´t know if it also must be in the USB Drivers section.

EJN63 is your man but while you're waiting...

If everything mentioned works fine then it may be a ghosted driver. If that's the case a few things you could try:

1. When you go to uninstall the unknown driver is there the box that says:

"Delete the driver software for this device" ?? If yes then check the box, uninstall and reboot. Message gone ? If no try 2.

2. Unplug your mouse from usb port. Then, using your touchpad, bring up the Device Manager. Do you still see the unknown driver ? If yes right-click on any text and select "Scan hardware...". Still there run the uninstall  from 1 (with Delete option if available). Close all and restart.

If this doesn't fix it there is an Urgent upgrade for your system software that may be required. (Normally this is the first thing you install after the OS so unsure if you can swap it in now.)

Your operating system is Vista, 32 or 64 ?

Your mouse is wired (not wireless) ?

btw, your memory card drivers are fine where they are.
