Updating hard drive

I am interested in updating to a solid state drive.  When looking at upgrades do all laptops use 2.5 inch drives and desktops 3.5 inch drives?  I assume it is the same as with disk drives.

Most notebooks use 2.5" drives, yes.  There are some small ones that use 1.8" drives.

Desktops generally use 3.5" drives, but there are some small ones that use 2.5" units - and a 2.5" drive can be used in a 3.5" slot with an adapter bracket.

JHNN,

Yes.  Newer large laptops use 2.5" SATA drives.  Older laptops use 2.5" PATA (IDE) drives.  You can check out the exact type of drive a system uses by referring to that system's manual on the Drivers and Downloads site:  http://content.dell.com/_layouts/xdb.ashx?global:apps2:sdc:downloads  Note that both SATA and PATA 2.5" Solid State drives are available.

Thank you.  So larger laptops such as the Inspiron, XPS, and Alienware with a 15 or 17 inch screen would use a 2.5" drive?
