Upgrading RAM to 12GB

Hello, I have XPS L501X.

Its got 2 slots for ram with 1 being used for 4GB RAM.

Official sites shows:

Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)

Maximum Memory: 8GB

Slots: 2

But many say more than that is possible. So I was hoping to get a new 8GB RAM to put in the other slot so that total is 12GB.

Will it work and which RAM should I buy ? Any one has done it ?

Re: Upgrading RAM to 12GB

Hi neomatrix1993,

The Dell XP  L501X system supports dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM with memory speeds of 1066 MHz /1333 MHz. At 1066 / 1333 MHz, this memory offers a significant increase of memory performance over previous platforms.

  • The memory solution is implemented in a dual-channel configuration, allowing the system to have twice the memory bandwidth while using the same memory technology.
  • Memory modules must be installed as a perfectly matched pair to take advantage of the dual-channel memory bus. If not a matched pair, the system's memory bus operates in a single-channel configuration.

XPSL501 has been tested with 8 GB memory. I recommend to use 8GB memory on the computer..

Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Slots: 2

Also, refer the picture below for memory configuration.

 Awaiting your response!

Thanks & Regards
Rajesh R

Re: Upgrading RAM to 12GB

You just repeated what i asked... what I'm asking is if I put 8GB in a single slot with the same config and 4GB in other, will it support together to make 12GB.

I dont want to know anything about total RAM 8GB, I want to know if more than that is possible and has anyone done it?

I looked at some sites :

G.Skill SA DDR3 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) Laptop RAM (F3-1333C9S-8GSA) --- This looks like it will work.

  • DDR3-1333/PC3-10600
  • SO-DIMM Memory Module
  • 204-pin Configuration
  • 9-9-9-24-2N CAS Latency

Will this work?

And what happens if someone installs this : Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) Laptop RAM (CMSX8GX3M1A1600C10)

  • 204-pin Configuration
  • SO-DIMM Memory Module
  • DDR3-1600/PC3-12800
  • 9-9-9-24 CAS Latency

What is the difference ?

What is this PC-3 and CAS latency ?

Re: Upgrading RAM to 12GB

The answer is that, you'll have to try it to find out.  You're going beyond the design specification of the system - no one can guarantee that what you want to do will work.  It may - and then again, it may not.  If it doesn't, be sure you understand your memory vendor's return policy.
