Video choppy on Alienware 17R3 (with GeForce GTX980M)

I tried to replace an old laptop with one which had better video. The Alienware 17R3 is supposed to have very good graphics but when I hook it up to a Dell U3415W monitor, Netflix displays very poorly: low refresh rate, jerky motion. The old, cheaper ASUS displays just fine. Both laptops use the HDMI input on the monitor and cable that came with it.

The Alienware 17R3 only has the HDMI output and a special output used for connecting up to an optional graphics amplifier. I was on the phone with tech support and they installed up to date video drivers which helped but the old ASUS is still noticeably better.

If Netflix is displayed in a small enough window on the external monitor, it runs fine but full screen is unacceptable.

Has anyone else seen the same problem?

Does anyone else have any suggestions?
