Volume gauge when using from +/- buttons is missing

I have an Dell XPS M1710 running XPSP2. Although the volume icon appears in the taskbar, now when I hit the volume +/- buttons it no longer visually shows me the volume indicator gauge on my screen (it used to appear right above the taskbar only when you press the +/- buttons, then vanishes when you let go). I would really like to get this back, as when I press the +/- buttons I have no idea what changes I have made until something plays a sound.

A support guy at Dell, on the phone yesterday, unticked a lot of start up items for a quicker boot time (using msconfig). Has he taken off something I can put back to fix this? What should I lool for?

Make sure "Quickset" is enabled (checked) in the MSCONFIG utility, then restart and see if that helps.

I have just started Quickset from the Start Button, and my gauge is back, and I have ticked it in msconfig to come on with boot up, so expect it to work when I next restart. Many thanks indeed!
