Vostro 1710 "blinking" screen

My otherwise pristine and reliable Vostro has become erratic in several ways.  The screen blinks, it boots slowly, the cursor goes into a lengthy blinking status at boot up, and things are just not right.

I've run all the diagnostics, no problem discovered.

Any suggestions, PLEASE!

TIA, pjl

Hi paullady,

I recommend you check the system in safe mode. To go to ‘Safe Mode’ restart the system and at the Dell logo tap the F8 key every two seconds. In the ‘Advanced Boot options’ window using arrow keys,  select ‘Safe Mode’ and hit enter. Once the system comes up to the desktop, I request you to work on the system in the safe mode for a while to check the system functionality.

I also suggest that you click on the link below to optimize the system performance:

Click ‘Run Now’ and then follow the on screen instruction.

This was some help and progress.  Safe Mode ran without the blinking and erratic other stuff.  However, I failed to mention the sys is XP, and the perf app does not run.

Where next please?

TIA, pjl

Hi paullady,

I would like to know if you are getting any error message while running the program to optimize system performance

If you mean the Microsoft link, it will not run, apparently because the application is for Win 7. So, no, no error messages.  Is there another optimization program?

Thx, pjl
