When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

I've browsed various forums and not seen a confirmed answer from our friends at Dell.  The M1730 is MORE than capable of running Windows 7 - I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit RTM installed.  Everything seems to work well for the most part, although I do experience video driver crashes from time-to-time.  They tend to occur when I'm playing World of Warcraft (not the most graphically intense application out there).  Searching the internets yielded no solid results, but I suspect it may be a heat issue.  That leads me to believe that this is the reason the M1730 is NOT currently on the Windows 7 supported hardware list, but I'd like to know specifically why and if/when we will see Windows 7 drivers and support from Dell.

Video drivers are the latest and greatest from Nvidia at the time of this posting and all other drivers are either Windows 7 native or Windows 7 drivers from the manufacturer.

Windows Advisor states that the M1730 fully supports Windows 7, why doesn't Dell?

My system information is (from DXDiag):

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

Considering how much money nVidia has already lost on the 8xxx laptop series cards, they may be totally done with any new development for it.

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

Thanks for the reply but tat doesn't really answer my question.  Dell has yet to provide an answer for WHY they aren't supporting Win7 on the 1730.  Considering it's a relatively new system (I believe they stopped selling it less than a year ago), I'm surprised that they won't support the latest Windows OS, especially since NVidia has drirver support for the 8800Ms (if this is, in fact, the reason they won't support it).

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

From your first post, it seemd to imply you found all the drivers for Win 7 except for the nVidia.... That is why I went down that path.

I am confused now. If you found the graphics card driver, and it sounded like you found all the others, what part of the 1730 is not supported?

EDIT: Okay, I see Dell's list of computers that are Windows 7 compatible. Interesting, it has the 1330 and the 1530, but not the 1730. I would almost think the list is wrong, especially if the MS upgrade advisor says so.... It seems like Dell's list is very short and that many possibly compatible systems are  not there...

Sorry - I understand now, but can't explain it.

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

No worries.  Sorry if I wasn't clear to begin with.  Yes, I found the official Windows 7 release drivers from Nvidia.  Glad I'm not the only one who's scratching their head at the list of Windows 7 compatible computers.

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

I just re-installed Win 7 RTM 64bit on my M1730. Have been using since b4 the first beta.

I checked my device manager, and there is a "Base System Device" that I cannot get the driver for.

I installed Win7, then Physx, then nVidia (from nvidia.com) the latest driver for the Logitech display, and everything else from Windows Update.

I never realized this on previous versions, but any ideas on what can this be? I have been checking the Device manager list and Dell's drivers page for WinVista, just to figure out what this could be.

Unfortunately there is still no intel driver for the chipset that supports Win7.

any Ideas?

The base system device may be the Ricoh card reader?

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

Interesting question

I'm running an XPS M1710 win 7 64bit RTM 4GB RAM and was wondering exactly the same....!

So, if anyone from dell could let us know I too would most appriciate it.

To be honest, with the RTM I have found it more problematic than the RC - Bluetooth issues driving me crazy...I did raise a post on the technet forum addresses to Todd Schiele from MS. He did reply but it didn't resolve my issues.

So if dell can publish a new driver that would be great too

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

XPS M1730, Windows Vista 32-bit.

I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor last night and it pretty much approved everything, except an old printer that I have. Advised to uninstall Windows Mobile and reinstall it after the upgrade. I am going to run the upgrade. I have 2 xtra hard drives and data on another. I have nothing to loose in trying.

I was wondering about the notebook system software as well. I also noted that the majority of the drivers have the same number than those for Windows Vista. But I guess they are compatible.

Re: When will the XPS M1730 fully support Windows 7?

Reading around, I wouldn't upgrade - I'd do a fresh clean install and leave all the vista baggage behind in the past - go on turn over a new leaf and wipe the slate clean

think about 64bit too
