While AC power adapter is connected most of the time, there is need to unplug the battery?

I know by own experience that having plugged the battery while connected to AC drains the battery life, in old laptops. But I am not sure if this has changed, there are some devices, like the Macbooks, that there is no need because the batteyr hardware cuts the energy input when full charged, so using AC and bettery at the same time doesn't shorten its battery life.

I have a Vostro 1700 and I need to know if I should plug or unplug the battery while connected to AC, that is most of the time, typically used like a desktop computer.

It remains true that heat hastens aging of batteries - so leaving the battery in, independent of whether it is charging or not, will reduce its lifespan.  For Mac owners it's now a moot point since the battery can no longer be removed -- for others, it's generally better to remove the battery when on AC power for long periods of time.
