Windows restarts, but black screen and pointer only
I have a Inspiron 15R N5110. Windows starts, then goes to login. After login a black screen with no icons or task bar. The only interaction that will take place is Control-Alt-Delete and the ensuing screen options. So I choose Task Manager to try and restart explorer.exe. But Task Manger screen never displays.
I am running Windows 7. I have tried the following:
sfc /scannow
chkdsk / r
Malware check - did find some, nothing serious, but it still does not come on.
Runs fine in safe mode.
Did notice their is a 2016 driver update for the Intel 3000 display adapter. Cannot get it to load new driver in safe mode.

FIrst run an extended diagnostic on the hard drive - F12 at powerup.

Your hard drive has failed. Back up what you need NOW. You'll need a new, 2.5" SATA drive and your backup OS recovery media.
Unfortunately, this model requires a complete tear-down to change the drive -- the drive is attached to the underside of the mainboard, which has to come out of the system to replace the drive.
