Windows unable to update after hdd upgrade

I just installed a new hard drive and installed the factory image from my system recovery disks. Everything seems to be running fine, except windows will not update. Error message is something like: Windows cannot update because services are not running, you may need to reboot.

After some research I checked that the services BITS and WU are indeed both running, and both set to automatic delay. I have of course rebooted several times to make sure that the settings are correct.

My system is a XPS 1640 and I am running windows 7 64-bit. The new hard drive is 750gb (which windows only reads a 664gb) whereas the old one was 300gb (I think). I am using the free version of avast anti-virus.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

 Hi Orbitor,

Stop the Windows Update service, delete the files from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and then restart the service. Please refer to the below link for more information.
