XPS 13 9365 Erratic touch pad behavior

Hi all,

My new XPS 13 9365 is suffering from erratic touch pad behavior. Moving the pointer with a single finger works fine.  Using two fingers to scroll up or down does not work with a consistent behavior.

In Edge or Chrome the vertical scrolling will often zoom in the page or cause a link to be clicked on the page, or the pointer can jump around. Trying to scroll in Windows Explorer is very bad.

All drivers and BIOS are up to date from Dell's site.

Some gestures mentioned in the online manual do not work.  For example; Circular Scroll, and One Finger Zoom.

I do not see any touch pad configuration application beyond what is included in the Windows 10 Settings.

This is the second 9365 we have purchased with this issue.

Has anyone else experienced this or have a fix?

Thank you!

RE: XPS 13 9365 Erratic touch pad behavior

Hi Matt,

Let me check on this and see if I can think of anything to try, do you still have the original system that is doing the same thing as well?

Best regards,

Brad

Hi Brad,

I do not have the original laptop with the problem.  That one was returned.  I do have the second one on hand.   Thanks for the help.

RE: XPS 13 9365 Erratic touch pad behavior

It is hard to understand exactly what you might be seeing.  For instance, with a web browser, clicking might increase the text size.  Two finger scrolling may behave differently in different apps.

I do not run Chrome, but I could check Edge if there is something specifically you would like confirmed.

My problem with this system is the Touchpad and Touchscreen seem to delay on an initial touch after a short period and will not react until after about a second after touched.  So, swiping can be inconsistent.

Saltgrass,

I may try and take some video of the issue on Monday.  I have not noticed a one second delay, but will look for that too.

Thanks

Brad, I made a video, but I am not too happy with the video quality and my commentary Smiley Happy  It is hard to see what is going on.  It is also hard to capture the feel of the touch pad and how it acts in the video.  I may try another video, but here is the one I made today.

If I scroll over  blank area of a webpage it acts good.  If i scroll over graphics, or html links it acts strange and may click a link.  Sometimes it will fast scroll 4-5 pages.

RE: XPS 13 9365 Erratic touch pad behavior

I agree the touchpad can be sensitive and can do strange things at times.

What desktop DPI are you running?  I normally use 200% but have at times used 175%.  I don't really like the 250% default setting.

Have you played with the sensitivity settings?

When I scroll, I don't move just the fingers, I try to keep them together and move from the wrist or elbow to try to maintain constant pressure.  If the fingers are exerting different pressures it may cause jumps.  When I scroll over a web page, I see the mouse cursor change to a hand but it does not activate, just indicates.

The touchpad on the 9365 is very smooth.  On my 7567 the touchpad is a little rough.  I think I like the smooth better which is just a personal preference but could effect how movement over the touchpad works.

You might also try turning off the Tap with single finger to single-click.  Maybe hat would keep it from activating when you scroll over a link.

Thanks for posting this, I think Saltgrass has some great suggestions, and also were you able to try adjusting the click? I will also try to look into this further.
