XPS 15 9560 -- USB 3.0 does not recognize StarTech Ethernet Adapter

I purchased a "StarTech USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter", but when I plug it in to either of the USB 3.0 ports of my new XPS 15 9560, the adapter is not recognized (no sounds / nothing shows up in Network Adapters / nothing).  Both USB 3.0 ports are working for an external (Logitech) wireless mouse.  I can also plug the same StarTech adapter into a Dell Latitude E6540 and it is correctly recognized.

I have updated BIOS (v 1.6.2 11/12/2017) and updated all drivers including:

  • Realtek USB GBE Ethernet Controller Driver (2.43.2017.907 ,A08  12/14/2017)
  • Thunderbolt Controller Driver (16.3.61.275 ,A03  7/20/2017)
  • ASMedia USB Extended Host Controller Driver (1.16.49.1 ,A06 10/24/2017)

Any ideas / suggestions?

Update:  After reading a discussion on a USB / XPS 13, I learned you can plug the Ethernet adapter into a USB hub.  It works, but not at the speed of a USB 3.0 connection.  When connected through the (very old) USB Hub, I was getting only 8.5 mbps compared to 240 mbps on my wireless connection.

Also, to be more specific, the adapter is an "ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter" branded as StarTech.

Well it would work at 3.0 speeds if you had a USB 3.0 hub, but if it works through the hub and not directly connected to the system, then maybe your system’s USB ports aren’t supplying enough power for the Ethernet adapter, even if they can power a wireless mouse receiver, in which case you’d probably need a replacement motherboard since they certainly SHOULD be able to handle that adapter.

Do you have other higher-power devices like a USB-powered external hard drive (not flash drive) to test this theory further?
