XPS 15 System Freeze issue

Hey all,

I think this is my second or third post about this.  Whenever I use graphic intensive applications (game or productive) my laptop freezes. I usually have external monitor setup via HDMI port and this is what happens.

Everytime this happens, my laptop's temperature rises to about 98 cecius with cooling pad underneath it.  I am concerned that this might be a hardware issue. What do you think?

Thanks in advance

Most of the time, screen turns to one solid random color.  One time it would be red, another green.

I have the exact same problem with my XPS 15.

I have wasted 2 days with Dell Technical Support and they believe issue is related to the NVidia Card. I requested a repair, they sent a technician this morning and the guy showed up with the wrong part.

Don't these parts get tested to make sure they're operational before they get assembled and shipped out to clients? Would cost a heck of a lot less and would alleviate all these headaches.

Hi,

Welcome to Dell community forums.

I am really sorry to hear about the system freeze issues with your computer. Kindly help the following information:

• Does this happen on your system lcd as well (without external monitor)?

• Does your system heats up while not playing games on the computer?

For the time being, I would suggest you to run the Dell Diagnostics.

In Order to Run the Dell Diagnostics, kindly click on the below mentioned URL to get the instructions on How to run the PSA Diagnostics , and an Error Code list with Possible solutions:

For SYSTEM HEAT UP ISSUE:  First check the air cooling vents and make sure that the passages are not clogged with lint and other stuff.

Simply raising your laptop off of any flat surface will allow fresh, cool air to come in from the intake on the bottom of the laptop. This will solve many of the heat issues you might be having.

Also, let it be known that you should NEVER have your laptop on any type of soft surface, such as a pillow, blanket, thick carpet, etc.; Doing so will not allow ANY cool air to enter the fan intake, and could cause more system hang ups and permanent component damage. Keep it on a flat, hard surface at all times

Please reply in case you have any questions.

Thanks & Regards

Replacement parts should be certified refurbished products.  But one of the motherboards I got failed in a few hours.

Hi,

I am currently resolving this issue with the techincal support. I was offered a system exchange in lieu of another motherboard replacement. And as for your questions:

- Without the external monitor, screen freezes without any distortion to it. Sort of a frame lock.

- Currently I have it so that my laptop is attached to a cooling pad.  When not using graphics, temperature is around 40 - 60 cecius degrees.  With the current motherboard I have (with graphics applications), it reaches up to 85 celcius I think.

I did run Dell Diagnostics with no faults reported.  HDD has been reformatted two times to date with the suspicion that OS might have corrupted.  Freshly installing the OS did not resolve the issue.
