Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

Hello guys ....

I had the exact same problem since December 2011.

I contacted dell support center and they replaced my motherboard for the fourth time yesterday.

After experimenting alot with my laptop, I think i know the root of our problem. This is my observation and if you want you can try this and check whether it works for you or not.

The loop over of sound when game freezes made me realize that there might be a audio (hardware/software) related problem. I think this is not because of hardware  but because of audio driver. Here might be the main problem:

Our laptop has realtek HD audio driver installed. when we install nvidia's graphics card driver, we also install Nvidia HD audio driver. This may replace the realtek's audio drivers there by creating a problem.

I am not 100% sure about my claim. So to test my claim, during nvidia graphics driver installation, i went to custom installation and unchecked the HD audio driver option. There was an older version already installed. I dont know how to remove it. Anyways, my laptop is doing good currently. I dont know whether this is a fix or not. You can try this by clean reinstallation of nvidia graphics card driver. I am sure it wont hurt any of the hardware.

For new XPS owners, please think twice before calling dell for motherboard replacement. They replace your mother board with refurbished motherboard which you may not want. I am not saying that those motherboards have low quality. They claim that they test it before shipping. i am just giving you guys a heads up on what to expect.

Anyways, try with removing the hd audio driver option in nvidia graphics driver installation and lets hope for the best. I will keep updating the status of my laptop.

Enjoy

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

Also one more thing....

I was playing crysis 2 and it had sound related issue during the intro part of every stage. it was giving me robot like sound even for the music. like the voice as well as the music had static in it. I thought that was wierd.

Did anyone else had the exact same problem ???

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

I also thought about the audio issue, but I never associated it with the audio from Nvidia. You might be onto something there.

Last time I formated, I had freezing issues, so I updated both video drivers, and the realtek just in case. Everithing looks smooth now... An it might be from installing the last realtek audio driver, and updating the creative drivers.

I really hope this is the solution.

I'll try to post the dl links as soon as i can get in front of my computer.

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

I was one of the firsts to post this issue back in may 2011, and, like everyone have tried to reinstall the drivers, bios, etc. Also after less than 5 months of use I had my motherboard replaced, but after two weeks the laptop started freezing again. I've noticed that after some nvidia drivers updates the freezing and stuttering were becoming less frequent in some games, but it still happened alot.

Anyway, I decided to follow someones advide to lower the graphics clock to 600MHz in the Device settings in the Nvidia Control Panel and since then I haven't got any more problems.

I don't know if it afects the performance of games (I didn't notice any) and I know that you say if we payed for a faster clock speed we shouldn't lower it (and I agree with you [are you listening Dell?]), but hey at least it works and you don't have to restart  the laptop after every 15 min of gaming and get startled when using headphones like myself.

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

yes, lowering the clock will affect performance on demanding games resulting in lower fps.

I started a topic at notebookreview forums about modded bioses.

some users reported undervolted bioses fixed the issue and also decreased the temperatures, but some others also needed to underclock the card (like you did).

the fact is the modded bios fixed the issue for some people and just improved the situation for some others

anyway, the sad point is that the only 100% working solution for the people having issues is decrease the gt540m clocks to gt525m speed in order to fix the crash 😮

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

I have better solution for this entire problem. Less overheating, no games freeze or no overclocking requires.

Before going further the issue, here my hardware & latest update driver version for my Dell XPS L502x:

- Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00Ghz (Turbo Boost to 2.90Ghz).

- Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 (1.5GB) (Driver: v8.15.10.22696)

- NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M (2GB). (Driver: v301.42)

- Realtek HD Audio: v2.68

- Seagate 750 GB SATA HDD.

- RAM 8GB (4x4GB).

- Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-Bit).

I purchase my XPS on April 2011 & until now lot information and testing I already done since buy this product. But now, I found that is Intel i7 cause the problem. The problem games freeze cause by the 2 graphic card running together & nvidia control panel setting cause the issue.

The Solution:

-          Before start playing games, you must switch graphic by manual in NVIDIA Control Panel Setting.  Go to “3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings”, under ‘Global Settings’ & switch under ‘Preferred graphic processor:’ setting from ‘Auto-select’ to ‘High-performance NVIDIA processor’. After done playing games, switch to ‘Auto-select’ for balance battery saving & performance. The reason doing this because to remove using ‘Intel HD Graphic’ when playing games & also helps boost games performance with less overheat issue. Intel HD cause gives extra heating to fan when playing games.

-          Please insure you change graphic switch in ‘Global Settings’ because even you already did switch for individual settings in ‘Program Setting’ to NVIDIA but Intel HD still in use. Global setting only can disable Intel HD.

-          2nd, I found that the cause games freeze are because enable ‘Threaded optimization’ in NVIDIA Control Panel. If setting to ‘Off’, no more freezing. So, no overclocking needed. Also disable ‘Antialiasing – Gamma correction’ setting because this setting only affects OpenGL programs. Already did test all the games especially ‘Call of Duty’ series & found no more freezing. Also, no more problem freeze with ‘Alan Wake’ or ‘NFS The Run’.

-          Please insure in “Nvidia Control Panel > 3D Settings > Set PhysX Configuration” switch from ‘Auto-select’ to ‘GeForce’ & also give help reduce overheating and extra performance to the games that required PhysX like MAFIA II games.

-          To reset the graphic clock to original setting, use official nvidia software call ‘NVIDIA SYSTEM TOOLS’. You can download here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-system-tools-6.08-driver.html.

-          If

So far, no more freezing after apply this setting & hopes can solved your problems.

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

For NVIDIA on Dell XPS 15 L502X

To minimize or eliminate freezing while playing games, you must do the following:

Install the latest NVIDIA driver, 301.42 as of this post.

NVIDIA makes many improvements to the driver including how it performs with various games and fixes specific bugs relating to game freezes.   Please read the Release Notes that are available for each new driver update.    The Release Notes change for each driver update and provide valuable information about game problems fixed and what issues are known to still exist.   Some issues are specific to a given model GPU.

Now do the following:

Open NVIDIA Control Panel.  Change settings as follows:  (Be sure to Click on Apply at the bottom right of the screen after each change for it to be effective.)

Under MANAGE 3D SETTINGS,  on Global Settings tab

            Preferred graphics processor:

Select “High performance NVIDIA processor”

Under “Settings”

                        Feature                                     Setting

Antialiasing – Gama correction            OFF

Threaded optimization                            OFF

Click on Manage updates . . .  link

On Preferences tab check boxes shown here and choose

Check for updates “Once a day (default)”

            Under Set PhysX Configuration

                        Under “Select a PhysX processor:”

Select “GeForce {your processor model number}”

(Select “GeForce GT 525M”  for my XPS15)

Heat is your enemy.   Apparently the Intel CPU generates additional heat when gaming as NVIDIA Optimus (the GPU processor switching technology built into the mobile NVIDIA GPUs) switches to the NVIDIA processor but appears not to completely shut down the Intel graphics.   The settings above appear to minimize this problem.

When done gaming, it is a good idea to switch the Global Settings processor back to Auto-select to maximize battery performance.   If plugged in all the time it is not as important.

This summarizes the information posted by mjamil85 on 06022012 in an easier to read form (I think).    There is a lot of logic to this due to the way the NVIDIA Optimus program works.

This should help if each step is completed exactly as indicated above.

@ tacoslammer: I should have clarified that it was 70k+ in INR, not USD, I supposed that its not being USD would be obvious from the context but there you go.

As seriousmode posted none of these fixes work, and I already have the latest NVIDIA driver.

The gist of my deleted post was that the customers of Dell's L502X laptops were effectively scammed into getting a defective product with either a faulty architecture or a poorly implemented technology like 'Optimus', and it's incredibly frustrating that there has been no official word or a fix for this issue YET. Avoid Dell like the plague.

Thanks for clarification on currency.  My assumption is that we all talk US$.   Hence my finding that you may have been screwed by paying $70k US!!  emoticon.Geeked.title   Delled twice!  emoticon.BigSmile.title

Sorry to learn the suggested changes don't work.   Apparently it worked for mjamil85 from his post that I summarized.   He may be on the right track in that the Intel graphics interferes with the Nvidia graphics.   Nvidia attempted to address that issue with Optimus that is supposed to switch from the Intel graphics to Nvidia's.   If you recall sometime back, Intel and Nvidia were tight coupled when Intel had no graphics capability.   When Intel developed a GPU they dumped Nvidia in favor of their own graphics generating some legal actions.   The squabble really has never ended.   What Nvidia has done is an "end around" Intel by implementing Optimus in mobile GPUs.  The attempt is to allow both GPUs to be used "as needed" to improve battery life for laptops.

Bottom line is that the gaming freeze when using Nividia GPU may be an Intel issue.   I think Intel has no interest in fixing it because Intel wants their graphics processor to be the only processor used.   We see some more evidence of this since Intel has improved their GPU with the introduction of the Ivy bridge.   I am not sure if Dell is ever going to be able to fix this problem.   It appears the Intel Ivy bridge CPU/GPU may be more compatible with Nvidia Optimus since I have not seen any similar problems   The Ivy bridge uses a different chipset also.

As a side note, recall that Intel had problems with the first generation of Sandy bridge processors.  Intel recalled them and hence the Dell model number differences in the XPS 15:  L501X being the 1st gen Intel processor and the L502X the 2nd.   It could be Intel never really fixed all the problems of the 1st gen Sandy bridge CPUs.   In Ivy bridge, Intel may have completed the corrections.

On your deleted post, it is interesting I got an email containing the complete deleted post.   In me Dell account settings I get emails for any posts made to this forum.  I guess the email went out before the moderator could stop it.   So why delete posts if emails are sent before the post is deleted.   Go figure.

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

i too have the same problem

i purchased this laptop in august 2011 and it ran fine till november  2011

after that i took a break from gaming and last month (may 2012) when i checked, my laptop had this problem

so i don't know when exactly it started malfunctioning but it did work properly for the first 3 months

now i have done everything that people on this thread have suggested (updating drivers, updating BIOS, running games on battery)

i was able to run crysis at 1366 X 768 at high setting while running on battery

but with the laptop plugged in, it barely lasted 20 minutes at low settings and then i started experiencing 2 second audio loops, video judder and subsequent crashes

i haven't tried the global settings of nVidia control panel that tacoslammer suggested above because i don't think that'll help since the games run fine on battery and optimus has got nothing to do with the power source i guess. still i'll give it a shot

so what should i do now?

i have around 65 days of warranty left

should i get the MB replaced?

that didn't seem to work for everyone

should i not give Dell support a chance and go ahead with underclocking the GPU?

also, has anyone tried rolling back to the drivers that came installed in the new laptop? i was thinking of doing so because the new laptop worked just fine.

so what should i do?

OJASV,

You said:  ". . . i haven't tried the global settings of nVidia control panel that tacoslammer suggested above because i don't think that'll help since the games run fine on battery and optimus has got nothing to do with the power source i guess. still i'll give it a shot . . . "

I don't believe I was addressing any power source concerns in the NVIDIA control panel settings post.   Someone already reported those changes did not make any difference, yet for one person it apparently did.  That is one of the reasons I mentioned in a later post about an Intel/NVIDIA problem.

You may want to check out the NVIDIA forum links.   It appears this problem is NOT an isolated Dell problem.   From the NVIDIA Forum, it seems there are many manufacturers whose laptops have the freeze problem with certain games.    As I mentioned in a recent post, it may be more of an Intel chipset problem associated with the Intel Sandy bridge processors the interaction with NVIDIA Optimus.   I don't believe Dell engineers are investigating this potential connection.

Good question.   Dell engineers need to get involved in a cooperative problem solving roundtable with NVIDIA and Intel.

This thread would not be as long as it is if anyone had the answer.   Keep after Dell to solve the problem.  Use Dell Chat for support and let them know your problem - over and over and over and over . . .

Setting my graphics card to 600 mhz like dafom said worked for me. I used a program named msi afterburner to do it.

/edit: some more info: crashfree for over a week now, and usually if I play games I crash at least twice / day.

I advise to call dell support and have them read this thread, and have them change the clockspeed for you, so that if you do something wrong, they can't say it's not under warranty. Ofcourse you'll have to comply to trying everything they suggest first, but if you have a reasonable person on the other end, it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

finally i found the solution guys and this time is reall  i was the first one who says down clock the gpu and i post it here but no one give it a suggested answer but its ok no problem also you dont have to down clock the gpu any more. after many test and tricks and like you guys i tried every thing and never give up with this laptop cuz i payed a lot of money like you anyway  i found the problem and it was the 3d driver and hd audio and update all you have to do now is

1.uninstall your driver and delete its all file by driver sweeper

2. download the last driver beta 304.48 from nvidia site .(ps) if you ok with you current driver just do the first step with your old one uninstall it

3.  now install the new driver or you old one with custom install and never install the 3d driver or hd audio and the update driver uncheck them all only install the nvidia driver you will find it marked and you cant uncheck it and the physics

4. make sure you do a clean install and you done now

i test it with most game that it used to be crash after 5min or 20 min max like black ops mwf3 crysis skyrim and many other i played for hours and push the system to the max no crash any more . one of my test was activate a trainer with black ops unlimited health and ammo no reload and i put a paper in the laptop pad to stuck it and left the game running and shot by it self  for 6 hours and guess what the system became hot but no crash at all i guess we finally found the solution guys please try it and let us know if it works with you too thanks

Depending on the specs you had in L502x. For me, it was a downgrade. A definite downgrade.  And no.  I complained that I had gotten a inferior system when the system exchange process is suppose to provide me with equal or better system.  Now I received a call from a manager (don't know what kind of manager) and he assured me that he'll be on the case to find out what happened then to fix this issue.

Not a fix but if you want to play without rebooting your laptop anyway I would suggest next:

1) download nvidiaInspector

2) run it and choose "show overclocking"

3) Move "Shader clock" thumb so the value to be less than "Memory clock"

4) press "Apply clocks & Voltage"

and done. This will work till you restart.

At least I could manage to play all games without any problems.

SOS.   Apparently you have not searched the Community.     There are many posts about this issue.    Most had to have the motherboard replaced!    Mine has the Nvidia 525M GPU and has never experienced the problem.   Most others have the 540M or above.   Make sure you have the most recent Nvidia Driver DIRECT from Nvidia.   Set your Nvidia Control panel (Help Tab, Preferences, Updates) is set to notify you automatically when new updates are available.   The latest driver is 310.70.   Nvidia is always fixing bugs and updating for new games.

If you have upgraded to Windows 8, its a new world out there!  emoticon.Geeked.title

I am at a loss as to any more help since you had MB replaced.   One caveat is Win 8.   Windows 7 is much better than Windows 8.    I know this issue has been around since the day after the last supper with Win 7.   But it seemed to go away after MBs were replaced and newer drivers installed, also the most recent BIOS.   Might try going back to WIN 7.   There have been lots of issues with WIN 8.

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

Sorry if this suggested answer has already been posted but I had issues when playing Guild Wars 2.

After 15-30 mins of gameplay, my computer would freeze, then show the desktop screen and then when i press the game icon at the bottom of the taskbar to load up the screen game, it would be green.

After reading other users having the same problem in the Guild Wars forum, the suggestion was to close the Intel Turbo Boost Technology program.

When I did this Ive had no interuptions during gameplay. Hope this works!

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

I'm still working with dell on this issue. Win8 is a lot faster than Win7. Really the only difference is the new start menu. other than that, it's still win 7 just with a new ui.

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

Try suggestion above and turn off Turbo Boost.   This does affect the CPU speed if the CPU demand drops during game play, turbo boost will drop the CPU speed which can cause game to stop or other problems.   Be sure the laptop power setting is for high performance also.

Turbo-Boost comes with the Intel i5 and i7 Processors.   You just may not have the monitor turned on.   It should be listed in Start > All  Programs

Re: XPS 15 l502x freezes during gameplay

My problem is similar but different.  First is that I don't play any games and I get the freeze during any operation: email, surfing, etc.  I get no video distortion or breaking up but just freezing with the wait circle that never goes away.  Sometimes I can do a Cntl-Alt-Del; but not always and I find myself doing a forced shutdown.  HOWEVER................and this is strange if I boot up in Safe mode I can do my email, surfing, downloading, etc. and never get into a freeze condition.  I checked the Startup programs and they are the same in Standard or Safe mode so there is nothing for me to experiment with and turn off.  I've clean out any dust and the Laptop sits on a good hard surface so there is no restrictions to the cooling.  I just reinstalled Windows and drivers but not the latest so that needs to be done yet.  This just started about a week ago and my L502 is 2.5 years old.  Comments?
