XPS 17 MEMORY UPGRADE CAPABILITY

I just took delivery of an xps 17 and I notice that the description of the memory is 8GB DDR3, 2 DIMM.

Does this mean I can't upgrade the memoy to 16GB in the future, because there are only 2 DIMMs?

Hello  jim_moden.

Welcome to the Dell Community Forum.

The Dell™ XPS™ L702X has 2 DIMM sockets and 4 DIMM sockets.

  • Motherboard with 1GB Video RAM have 2 DIMM sockets.
  • Motherboards with 3GB video RAM (Nvidia GT 450M) have 2 slot DIMMs because it has non 3D video solution.
  • Motherboard with 3D 3GB Video RAM have 4 DIMM sockets
You can check the configuration you ordered for the upgrade options and support for 16 GB memory on your computer.

That would depend on the configuration, some of the XPS 17 versions have 4 slots of the memory but only 2 of them are usable (there's no clips and wires over the connector) which means with the limit of 4 megs per slot, 8 oculd be the max.

As an addition, depending on the number of supported slots, you can have up to a 4 gig memory chip in each slot (so 2 slots = 8 max, 4 slots = 16 gig max) according to the supported Dell answers.  I've heard of but not confirmed that you may be able to use an 8 gig stick of RAM in the system, but it's not a supported  or acknowledged configuration

Hi

so is ther definately only 2 usable slots on a 702x with 8gb ram and 3gb non sd video card?

I just ask as the two online memory chcker things ive tried both say there are 4 slots - 2 of which are empty.

Also - if there are only 2 slots do you have link to somewhere i can order 2 lots of 8gb?  as i cant seem to find anywhere

thanks

Hello olliebobs.

Welcome to the Dell Community Forum.

The Motherboards on the Dell™ XPS™ L702X with 3GB video RAM (Nvidia GT 450M) have 2 slot DIMMs.

Each memory connector on the motherboard supports memory module capacities of 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB so adding in two 8 GB cards would not be supported by the motherboard and may prevent the computer from powering up correctly.

I have Dell XPS L702X with currently 8GB of ram installed (2 Dimms)

My video card that came with the laptop is Nvidia GT555 3GB

Hi Rotem.Tsabari,

The Dell XPS L702X having Nvidia GT555 3GB video card has 2 memory DIMM slots on the system board. The system accepts a memory capacity ranging from 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB. The memory type accepted is DDR3 1066/1333 MHz SODIMM only. The computer supports a maximum of 8GB of memory when installed with two 4GB DIMMs.

Hi all,

Rotem.Tsabari and everyone else - The XPS L702X configured with the GT555 3GB video card has 4 (FOUR) SODIMM slots, each able to hold a max of 4GB SODIMM; they are stack one over the other.

Open the back and REMOVE the visible sodimm and you will find the other slot UNDERNEATH.  Even the markings tell you that there is a DIMM A and a DIMM B in each portion.

Your system supports 4 SODIMMs, each with a maximum of 4GB giving you16GB total memory; even the user manual states that.

Hi CHE.BON,

I'm sorry ... but that's not true!
My Dell XPS X702l have 2 SODIMM slots (there are no 4 slots!),
i ordered from EBAY 2 SODIMM 8GB each and the RAM works PERFECT!,
I currently have a 16GB with 2 DIMMs (2 X 8GB)
This is the link:

EBAY 16GB (2X8GB)

Best Regards,
Rotem.

Hello folks,

please help me with RAM issue. My L702x has the same configuration as Mr. Rotem.Tsabari describes:

8GB of ram installed (2 Dimms), video card that came with the laptop is Nvidia GT555 3GB

Dell official, DELL-Ravi CH describes: on 3 Jun 2015 12:28 that such system can accept max. 8GB of RAM!

Finally Rotem.Tsabari declares clear message, his L702x accepts 2 x 8GB, in above mentioned 2Dimm slot machine and moreover he added link with appropriate modules which are suitable for XPS 15 (L502X) as described in link here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270912048183?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I found RAM modules that suits exactly for L702x but in description there is some "3D" suffix: Dell XPS 17 (L702X) 3D here is link with detail specification: http://www.ebay.com/itm/16GB-2x8GB-RAM-Memory-Compatible-with-Dell-XPS-17-L702X-Notebooks-DDR3-A13-/280835324355

COULD SOMEONE CONFIRM THAT: 2 X 8GB (16GB in total) works for mentioned L702x and if so recommend the best modules, please? Thanks in advance.

The 3D vision shipped with the option of a 4-slot board (4x4=16).

The non-3D version (2 slot board) is 2X4=8 max, officially.

with 16GB of RAM over 2 dimms

my RAM is with max bandwidth of PC3-10700 (667 Mhz)

i didnt try a faster RAM!

Hello Rotem. Now I can confirm memory upgrade to 2 x 8GB works fine. Now I use my L702x for second week and system is stable and performs well.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
