XPS 18 "Ghost Clicking" Problem

Jump to solution

I just purchased the Dell XPS 18 and right out of the box noticed a very bizarre "Ghost Clicking" issue. When the touchscreen is enabled the computer will randomly "click" various places on the screen with a mind of its own.

Usually it clicks in about the same place because it usually clicks the same bookmark in my browser, but the issue happens in every application.

When I disable the touchscreen the problem goes away and what is very weird is that the issue specifically seems to only happen with the touchscreen enabled when the computer is on the charging stand . . . When I lay it down flat on my desk (not on the charging stand) and use the keyboard and mouse, the issue doesn't seem to happen.

Any ideas Dell engineers? I have already spoken with support. I have updated my drivers, the OS, the BIOS, and even installed a "touch screen patch" that I was very hopeful would solve the problem, but nothing has worked!

Please help!

I have good news, my issue was fixed!

The bad news is that it took a Dell technician to replace the whole board. So I'm not sure exactly what the issue is but in my case it required basically a whole new computer to fix Smiley Frustrated

Anyways, good luck to everyone else with the issue!

I don't want to jinx it but.  I have done that with temporary success. I use my xps 18 like a tablet. carry it around use it on my lap.... problem I found may be due to my carrying it... after last posting I opened it again and examined the touch ribbon cables with a magnifier. there is a very slight line cut through insulation across one. it lines up with one of two silver plates stuck on the inside of the case back. don't know why they are there or what they do. I think maybe case flex allowed them to press the touch cable. I covered damaged area with electrical tape.  problem mostly solved. sometimes on start when cold I get the phantom touches. usually clears with a hard boot. that may be due to the existing damage. if you are comfortable opening case I suggest putting electrical tape over the two silver plates so that even if you get some flex, they can't damage the cables. if your cable has damaged insulation put the tape over the damage. it will insulate and stabilize.

I hope this helps

Dell Technician came by today. He thought it was the touch screen controller so we tried replacing that. The issue seemed to be fixed but a few mins after he left the issue cropped up again. It seems to be happening less frequently now though . . . so bizarre!

Thanks for posting about the issue. Let me know how the LCD replacement goes.

I had a tech come onsite but he just replaced the touch controller and not the whole LCD. It seemed to fix the problem so he left without doing the full LCD replacement. Then 20 mins after he left the problem started happening again . . . ugh!

Well it's certainly really bad news that it did not fix the problem. There is a way to easily disable the touchscreen though. With the touchscreen disabled the problem does not seem to occur.

Press the Windows Key, type in Device Manager, find the HID-compliant touch screen under Human Interface Devices, right click on it and select Disable.

Then you can enable it when you want to use the touchscreen.

It's definitely extremely stupid having to do this all the time. I'm waiting for them to send me a new one that hopefully doesn't have the problem . . .

glad to hear its fixed ...mine is too after all the part replacements, the 3rd computer fixed the problems ...3computers in a month. Dell customer service was outstanding I have to say though...I just didn't expect all the problems from a machine that I have only had about 6 weeks now...but im glad it is fixed.. the only thing is I paid extra for the killer wireless card and they sent me the Centrino
