XPS M1530 - Slow Startup / Bootup / Shutdown

Hi

I have a Dell XPS M1530, T8100 with 2gb RAM running Vista Premium SP1. I have a slow boot-up - it takes about 2.5-3 minutes from switch on to get to the desktop. Shutdown takes a couple of minutes.

Crucially, in startup, the main delay isn't once the desktop appears and programs from "startup" are loaded, it's the very first screen after the bios - it's a black screen with the scrolling green bar with "Microsoft Corporation" text below. The system stays on this screen with the green bar scrolling for about 1 minute.

In Event Viewer I have the following error message:

***STARTUP ERROR***

Can anyone please advise? I am pretty sure this isn't the Startup programs under MSCONFIG as I have removed quite a few of these.

Many thanks

In this situation I would try three things to fix this. First, I could run a chkdisk. If that didn't solve the issue, I would run a professional defrag tool (I recommend O&O don't use the Vista one if possible). Finally I would boot up my Vista OS DVD, and go into "Repair my system" Once you select your Vista installation, it may fine the bug on its own, and repair it on its own. If not, tell it to pull up a command line, then do this.

Bootrec.exe (enter)

/FixBoot (enter)

y (enter, this accepts the fixboot command)

/FixMbr (enter)

y (enter, this accepts the FIX MBR command)

exit (enter)

Then reboot. Your problem should be fixed at this point. If its still giving you an issue you may need to reinstall, though usually rewriting your Boot and Master Boot Records will fix your problems.

Cheers

Cameron
