annoying "Beep" and "Click" noises from inside XPS laptop
Hi everyone,
I now own a DELL XPS M1530 since 2-3 month and am concerned + ennoyed by the fact the laptop is making random "beeps" and "clicks" once in a while (maybe once every 30 minutes or so):
- This seems to be happenning regardless of the application you are using, even when the laptop is just switched on but not used!
- This problem has been there since day one
- These 2 noises are very noticeable and seem to be located towards the left side of the laptop.
- Part from the disterbance of the noise, this does not seem to have any impact on performace whatsoever.
- The feeling this provides is very dispointing, I bought this laptop thinking it was a top of the range one... but it feels pretty cheap to me at this stage!
==> Are all XPS laptops doing this?
==> Does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem?
My laptop configuration is as follow... (not sure from what component the noise may be comming from)
Processor: T9300 2.5GHz
Graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Hard drive: Samsung HM320II
Ram: 4Go

it just did the click noise again a few seconds ago... and I think a good comparison to try and describe it would be the noise of a floppy disk when you eject it (when it comes out of the floppy drive). It probably only last one second but is fairly loud and worrying...
after a search on the forum, it seems like someone else raised the Beep & Click issue already, but no solution found at this stage:

It's the HD - drives me nuts! But with a few tweaks it can be tamed!
Note: beware of third-party programs offering relief - they come with their own problems. Sometimes it hit or miss and (running an efficient machine) really comes down to what works for your system and your needs. Here's some suggestions that have worked for me:
- Installed SP1 and any other critical OS updates available (click Support link above, enter your Service Tag)
- Installed the current BIOS (Support link above)
- Removed junkware (think Google apps/Antivirus/Demos/freeware/anything not of high quality or compatibility)
- Disabled Indexing (highlight drive e.g., C:, right-click & select properties, uncheck Index this drive...)
- Disabled Windows Search (services.msc, disable)
- Disabled hardware I'm not using (varies for each user) e.g., second NIC, Biometric reader (fingerprint reader)
- See my other tips here:

There's also a setting in the BIOS that will run your HD quieter - I believe it's in performance. You sacrifice a little performance by using it.

It's HD power saving issue. Try hdparm: hdparm -B 254 /dev/hda
http://hdparm-win32.dyndns.org/hdparm/
or Notebook Hardware Control (in hard disk settings set "Advenced Power Managment" to Max. performance (254))

Use caution with this program - the developer hasn't released a Vista SP1 version yet. The current version was released over 1 year ago. On top of that you have to install .NET. No thanks.

well, my HD failled a few weeks ago.
Dell after-sale service has been really impressive, 3 days later, they came to my house, replaced the HD and re-installed Windows, at no cost at all to me (part from the loss of data!!). Since then, my laptop does not make any more strange noises as it use to!
One recommandation: if your XPS laptop does the above mentioned type of noises, I would suggest you backup your data quite often, just in case!
cheers
