Use Dell Command | Update to install Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) drivers for Latitude E5570 / 7275 / 7370 / Precision 3510 / 5510 / XPS 15-9550 / XPS 13-9350 & XPS 12-9250

Dell provides the Dell Command | Update Application on a business client supported platforms to simplify the BIOS, firmware & driver update experience. This application is located under the "Systems Management" section of the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Be sure to pick your system type from the list or enter your service tag to ensure you get the right version for your system.

  • Install the Dell Command | Update v2.2.0 available for the system in the "Systems Management" section to obtain the latest firmware and drivers.

NOTE: The application allows users to download and install the latest firmware and drivers on their systems, including

  1. System BIOS
  2. Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver

Other than above automatic installation, it’s recommended that users download and install the Dell Dock Firmware Update utility (expected to be available to download by August 2016) and Intel HD Graphics Driver manually.

Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) Installation Guide for Latitude E5570 / Precision 3510

The latest BIOS, drivers and Firmware can be downloaded at the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Dell highly recommends installing the following BIOS / Drivers step by step in the prescribed order to ensure optimal performance. Failure to install BIOS, drivers and Firmware in this document may result in undesirable performance.

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) and then connect the Thunderbolt™ 3 (Type-C) connector to the computer.
  2. Search your system model name under Select a Product selection or enter the service tag of your system to locate Drivers & downloads page on the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Change the OS to view all available updates for your system.

  4. Power on the computer with the docking station connected.

Ditto. Sent mine back yesterday at the end of the 30 days return window.
Could never get it to work no matter the version and sequence of firmwares & drivers I tried.
1 month wasted beta testing a product that should have never been released in the first place.

Don't think I'll buy it again and just wait for a similar product from another company.

This dock debacle has honestly put us in a pretty bad place.  We took a leap of faith moving from the (now retired) M4800s to the new 5510s.  All users will be supplied a dock, and this has brought about a ton of issues for out beta testers.  I'm now stuck with either rubber stamping a defective product, or offering nothing in its place.  Dell support wants me to waste time and jump through all the hoops that I've already been through.  I'd be happy to order a ton of these computer/dock combos if they could just get them to work.

Since my XPS 15 is several days old, I decided to do a system reset, choosing the remove all files/settings and reinstall Windows.  I then installed everything in the order suggested in this thread.  (Previously, I had installed in the order suggested by the TB15 manual, and it's slightly different.)  For me, the end result is unchanged.  The dock is pretty stable with audio, Ethernet and external hard drives.  However, when I connect my monitor (a U2715H), either via Display Port or mini Display Port, instability starts.  This behavior is the same whether I have other connections into the dock or just only video.  The video on the monitor cuts in and out, finally resulting in not coming back on.

On another thread user @Thysanoptera was suggesting that overheating might be the cause of the dock DisplayPort instability. He does have a point: the dock gets quite hot to the touch, it doesn't have an active cooling and the case has no venting whatsoever.

I quote him:

"The dock is overheating and I'm 100% sure it is the cause of at least the problems with Display Port going off. My display goes off after 1 to 3 hours. I opened the dock, put heat sinks on couple of chips (usb hub controller and DP hub) and that resulted in 12 hrs of trouble free operation, but the display still went off. So the next time I kept the case open and for 24 hours had no issues. Closed the case (partially) and display went off after an hour.So this time, without turning anything off,  I just blew the air over the the dock motherboard - and the DP screen came back on.

Dell should recall this thing, it is going to be really funny when summer comes. I'll keep mine, just mod it with a fan, I'm pretty sure the new batch has the same design flaw and it is only a matter of time when every single customer will have issues. My dock was working fine for three weeks.

As far as DP monitor going off is concerned, I can replicate this at will, it's the DP hub - VMM3320, the Synaptics chip. The USB hub controller gets also hot as *** and is rated at 70C only, maybe that's responsible for the other stuff people report, Ethernet depends on it also. I'm pretty sure that just cutting some vents will be enough. I can't believe Dell just sealed the case completely without allowing any airflow."

I had read this also.  I tried to replicate his findings with my setup.  I opened the dock and had a fan blowing on the unit, but my issues with display remain unchanged.

What's interesting, though, is that although video to my external monitor blacks out and it goes into sleep mode, I can still see it in the Intel graphics control panel.  It's as if the system knows it's there but loses contact with it.  This loss of video signal also crashes anything else connected to the dock.  Ethernet, audio and any other peripherals lose connection.  After several seconds, everything, including video, will reconnect.  This cycle will repeat 3-5 times until everything crashes and doesn't recover again.

In summary, for me the dock is stable without video, but unusable with.

In my case the display also would turn itself off with a 'no signal' message but the screen remained attached in Windows, you could move mouse and windows on it. Same as Mingus wrote. What's different is that my screen was ok for an hour or more, and all USB devices were working fine. And I had heatsinks attached to DP and USB hub chips when blowing air.

Did someone who has issues try to power the dock with the stock laptop power adapter?

I have a new TB15 and WD15 which I assume will both be set up by following the TB15 instructions.

What isn't clear is at what point during the BIOS/driver/firmware updates should I plug the TB15 in?

Hi,

I've been trying for days to make my TB15 dock work with my XPS 15 9550... 

I've followed the EXACT steps for the XPS 15 9550 mentioned in the first post here, as well as many other combinations.

Final result is ALWAYS the same:

ASMedia controller is listed under the USB controller but I have another "Unknown Device" appearing.

The only "semi-working" things on the dock are the DisplayPort (except the external screen regularly blanks out) and the charging through the USB-C connector.

None of the other ports have any use at all: Ethernet is not recognized, usb ports do nothing at all except powering up the devices.

Is my dock defective? How can I further troubleshoot the issue?

We need this for Windows 7 64 bit. We have a Precision 5510 and 3 XPS 13 9350's using these docks w/ Windows 7.

Step 7 – Download and Install Update for the USB audio/mouse on Dell Thunderbolt Dock and Dell Dock. Restart required.

 When I tried to do it online, it gave me errors (thought I had bought it outside the USA). So I called Dell directly to set up my return and the support person configured everything within about 10 minutes, sent me an e-mail with links to print the return label and other related information. I might be best to try that.

I've spent fives hours trying to get the TB15 to work on my XPS 13 and I'm almost at fully functional. However, the only video port I can get to work consistently is the VGA. HDMI and the displayports are useless -- constantly disconnecting every few seconds.

Anybody have any tips for breaking down this problems. I've gone through every drivers 10 times and I'm out of ideas. I'm trying to connect to an external Dell monitor that is 1080p, 60hz refresh rate.

After being stable for most of the week, I now can't keep my external monitor on displayport working for any more than a minute or so.

There has been zero changes to my setup.  None.

This is flat out ridiculous.  Worst still is no one at Dell has responded in a week to my RMA request.  I submitted it Sunday of last week and it's still sitting there, status unchanged.

I would suggest you call them instead. I did and they took care of the RMA quickly and easily. Emailed me the shipping label the next day.
