In the description of the new TB firmware update it also says a prerequisite is to install the TB driver first - and then directs you to an older version of the driver than is offered in the drivers page (there is a newer TB controller driver version available).  Very strange.

Not sure who is minding the store over there on the XPS 13 drivers page.   When I install the TB firmware update it says it will take up to 3 minutes - then it takes about 30 seconds - goes about 30% across the install screen and says "firmware is up to date" - even when installing the new version.  Very confusing but it does encourage the customer to keep extending their warranty service so we can call and ask what is going on.

100% agree with the fact that Dell Drivers & Downloads pages are totally confusing. A few days ago there were many different TB drivers and firmwares appearing on the XPS page as well as on the docking station pages, and they were not the same !!

Asked Dell Support under my Support Pro Warranty Contract for clarification which never came ! Still the docking pages and the XPS pages were'nt showng the same TB drivers a couple of days ago.

Instead of clarifying, and after much insisting Dell Support yesterday preferred to perform an online remote update of my configuration and installed or reinstalled

1)  Chipset_Driver_D91CC_WN32_16.1.47.275_A02.EXE

2)  Intel_TBT3_FW_UPDATE_NVM16_A04_2.16.01.003.exe

plus the other things appearing on the dockfing station page.

He also modified the Wake on LAN  network adapter property to Off (Thru device manager).

Also uninstalled Dell Update which in the past replaced some drivers and broke my config.

Bios is 1.20.1

Must reckon that since yesterday my XPS15 9550 + WD15  hasn't been subject to any trouble (LAN, USB, Shutdown dump). Quite a change since the initial February.delivery of everything and a lot of manual driver and firmware updates

Still no problem at all !! the only funny thing is that when I connect a USB disk to my machine, it is mapped to F:\ instead of E:\  (I partitionned the SSD into C:\ and D:\).

I once connected my USB printer and that created an E\: device ? but even when disconnected the HD appears as F:\.  May be the OS remembers the mapping across devices .

I have a 5510 as well but on win 7 and the updates since July have helped a lot. I now actually use the USB and ethernet that is in the dock. I had a period of several weeks were i had zero issues but now occasionally have a stuttering keyboard or mouse that requires a restart. Sometimes towards the end of the day my second monitor turns off. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the issues, but its workable now.

So I returned my XPS 15 and got a Precision 5510 and I now have zero issues.  Here is my set up:

3 x Dell U2415 (Display Port, mDP, and HDMI)

1 - Dell Precision 5510 (Xeon, 4K, 32GB Ram, 512 SSD, Windows 10 Enterprise

TB 15 Dock purchased in January 2016

So with my XPS 15, I could drive all of the screens, USB and Ethernet but only if the lid of the laptop was open, and sometimes on start up I would not get USB or Ethernet and would have to restart.  Displays stayed on all day long 8-10 hr days typically.

With my Precision 5510, everything works with the lid closed.  USB, Ethernet, all 3 screens.  Installed Win 10 from scratch through MDT, then updated BIOS, and TB firmware, drivers etc.  Rock solid.  No idea why the 5510 works but the XPS had issues.

Thought I would give some good news on here.  Dock is still very hot and Dell has done a terrible job handling these issues.

5510 has Intel 8260 WiFi while XPS has Broadcom. Replacing the Broadcom card with Intel was one of the first things I did with my XPS and other than overheating DisplayPort hub of the TB15 I have no other issues.

Maybe the newer version of the 5510 already has some revisions to the hardware. I have an early version of the 5510 with all the problems mentioned here. Installed all driver updates which helped a bit but still not stable. I need ethernet and wlan connctivity at the same time. So far the only thing that worked reliably is a usb to ethernet adapter. dell support confirmed that they have hardware problems and my two tb15 are on the list for replacement hardware when it gets released.

I have Precision 5510, and TB15. After plugging the TB15 dock (without any other devices attached to the dock) to the laptop, the fan is switched on strongly, and it is really noisy. Is there anyway to get rid of this?

Thanks

This may be because the laptop can now run in high performance mode rather than low power mode. You can try changing the power settings to remain at balanced or quiet in the Dell Precision Performance Optimizer or the Dell Power Settings.

Kyle, which HP Thunderbolt docks have you bought?

This one has very poor reviews on HP site store.hp.com/.../hp-elite-thunderbolt-3-65w-dock and no reviews on Amazon :-/

Dell products recently have been a constant source of pain for me (I've got two 9530s and the TB dock)...

My dock was working fine for roughly two months and then started acting up again.  Thankfully I work in an IT position and have quite a bid of hardware at my disposal.  We just received an order of HP Thunderbolt docks a few days ago so I tried one...literally plug and play.  Everything is working 100%.  Not only does it work, but it is smaller, looks better, and produces no heat.  I currently have it mounted to the back of my monitor stand for a nice cable free desk other than the cable going to the dock and still no heat issues.  Just throwing that out there for anyone who is sick of fighting with the dell.

On another note I have no t received the promised weekly updates on the situation from Dell that I was promised.  I have given up all hope of getting a working dock from them any time soon.

They are discontinuing their E-Docks this year so they better get something figured out quick.

I was incorrect by saying it was their Thunderbolt dock.  It is actually their USB-C dock.

may not carry data as fast but I have my XPS 13 running at 4K and 2 1080P monitors attached to the dock as well as an external hard drive, webcam, and desk phone with no issues.  I use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
