BIOS Update breaks my Dell 5510

Hardware

Dell 5510

WD15 Dock

Steelseries wired keyboard

Logitech MX Series Wireless Mouse

2 * 23" LG IPS Monitors

Firmware:      Precision_5510_1.2.13

Symptoms

Works initially but after a random period my wireless mouse stops working or my keyboard just hangs up. This is with a Wired Ethernet only - Wireless is currently disabled. This does not happen with Firmware release V1.2.10

I cannot get them back other than via a reboot.

Back to Precision_5510_1.2.10 firmware for me until they release another (supposedly stable) BIOS.

What's happened to the Dell Dock Firmware Update tool? Will it have to be run on every dock individually? I don't fancy wandering around every single dock to do a manual update.

The above is all fine, but what if you're using SCCM to roll out drivers via SCUP? The latest catalog does not have the right installable rules for an XPS 9550 and still tries to install old firmware and drivers (so I expect Dell Command | Update will suffer from the same problem as it uses the same catalog).

This is particularly bad with a laptop that's had its firmware upgraded to 16, but SCCM will only allow it to install the v15 drivers.

To say I've got a lot of  users extremely annoyed at constant blue screens would be an understatement.

Earlier this year I was promised that Dell will develop a new dock for XPS laptops. They also promised that I can get one of those new docks when ever it is released. Yesterday I asked about the status of the new dock and I was told that there is not going to be one.

So Dell will never make a new dock for XPS laptops. There will not be a dock for USB-C port, ever.

The funny part is that I have waited for the new dock so long that I can't return my dock to the retailer anymore and the reason for waiting is the promise of getting the new dock.

> There will not be a dock for USB-C port, ever.

This is shocking - someone mentioned the HP Thunderbolt, but the reviews there look as dismal as for the Dell dock.   It would be interesting to see the media pick up on the issue now; is there a fundamental design problem that prevent a successful implementation?   The media printed story after breathless story about the coming of Thunderbolts after the January CES.   The techie sites should be interested in a real world followup.

I just found this on the Dell knowledge base site (last update of the site was 09/16/2016):

I don't think, that they will announce a new cable for the TB15, if they are not going to bring it back on the market...

Maybe it's time I wasted my time with the Dell tech support. My TB15 is a dead brick, nothing works. I have updated everything  after waiting several months for updated BIOSes. If I plug in the monitor on the DP then the whole thing crashes completely. Laptop screen and external screen go black and the whole thing has frozen, I need to remove the TB15 and cold boot the laptop. Nothing at all in the Windows event viewer about an error, just that the system was restarted after a failure.

I have 2 TB15's the 2nd a replacement for the first from Dell support.  Both never have worked properly even with the updated firmware/drivers issued.  The funny thing is they (Dell support) did not ask for the 1st unit be shipped back to them!

Yesterday I spent close to 2 hours trying to get a refund on the TB15.  Customer Care is denying the refund.  I explained to them I have an email from Dell tech support that states...Our resolutions team advised that if unwilling to wait for the said fix, they have approved that refunds outside the return period will still be granted, and such process can be communicated with by calling our Sales or Customer Care team.  Customer Care is claiming that the Dell support team are not authorized to make such claim and are still denying a refund.  I asked for a manager on duty and explained to him the situation and he also stated sorry your past the 30 day window and argued the fact I had an email stating a refund would be issued.  He also said sorry!

Why doesn't Dell recall the TB15's like Samsung is doing with the Galaxy?  Maybe if there was more publicity on this issue their hand would be forced.

The problem why communication is non-existent about these issues is probably that nobody buys a high-end notebook without a working high-end docking solution. I'm stuck with a notebook that I can't use.

In my case its definitely heat related and exactly the same on 2 docking stations. I guess there is also a heat issue on the notebook itself since if USB3 / Thunderbolt gets plugged in there is a warm spot on the surface and the fans drive me and my co-workers crazy. It got better with firmware upgrades but the issue is still not solved - fans are on even when idle and fully loaded.

Dropping screens is definitely 100% heat related. I had a stable setup for a month or so and then suddenly the external monitor crashed. It turns out I put a book on the dock and that was causing too much heat! Fortunately I don't have to do this fan-thingy (knocking on wood!), but until Dell prepares an official statement I'm not giving this unit back. It's mostly working and I could get a worse one.

Samsung did it because the Note 7 issue was dangerous and could get people killed. We have TB15 that does not work in the worse case, it won't get your house burned to the ground :)

Of course I'd like them to fix this issue but coupled with problems with 9350 that I have and other docks I'm starting to think that this Skylake/Thunderbolt thing is just broken and Intel doesn't want to admit it. Or maybe they fixed it in the meantime and we're stuck with old models? That's just a wild guess...

From what I've heard from co-workers all new gen slim USB-C/Thunderbolt high-end machines have issues (I assume the inner workings/chipsets are all the same). Probably a reason why Apple does not come out with a pro book based on this technology yet.

Shame on Dell.  We are all having the same issues.  Its easiest to discontinue writing notes, and also discontinue buying their products.  Maybe a Lenovo next time?

As some of you may know I fought with the Dell dock for a while and then switched to a non Thunderbolt HP dock that worked well but occasionally suffered bandwidth issues due to USB 3.1 limitations.  I bit the bullet and pre-ordered the StarTech Thunderbolt 3 dock, and it is by far the best solution thus far with my XPS-13.  It also works flawlessly with a Precision 3510 I have.  The only issue I have had is first thing in the morning I may have to unplug it and plug it back in for the laptop to notice it is there.  I have gone two full days now with absolutely no issues once it is powered on.  I am using the built in 4K monitor and two external 1080P monitors as well as Gig Ethernet, 1080p USB webcam, speakers, USB 3.0 hub (swapping external drives), and a USB-C USB hub and card reader.  This is how the Dell dock should work.  I had to contact StarTech customer service initially because I could not get the dock to work.  The technician, who answered after the second ring, told me to use the latest non Dell manufacturer drivers.  Once I did that, it worked as described.  The only downside to this dock is it does not power the laptop.  I had an extra charger anyway so no big deal.

In summary, go buy this dock https://amzn.com/B01AAAU4WS and a spare charger.  Use the Dell dock for target practice.

Dear all,

I use a XPS 9350 for about 1 year. I ordered it (my error) together with "the" docking station. Only after getting it I realised that is was only a USB 3.0 extender. But it worked (not really good, but without problems)! In Februrary I order the new docking station TD 15 with 180 watt. As nearly everyboody I had a lot of problems, useless to explain all of them. After about 2 months of updating everything more or less everything works BUT i got about 1 time a day a blue screen. And the problem was not of the XPS, when I worked without docking station I had no problems (also during a 3 week Holiday in august). Coming back to work the blue screens restarted. In the meantime I read on this blog that cutting of the wireless should help - i did that, maybe it helped a little bit (5 bluescreens a week instead of 6).

One day I had "only" the problem that my keyboard and mouse stopped to work. I had now time to reboot, so I changed the Logitech Unifying adapter from the docking station to the left USB port of my Dell 3014 monitor. this was last monday - now i am working for 10 (!!!!!!) days without bluescreen.

I waited a little bit before writing this post, because I wanted to be sure that it really helped, but now I feel fine, that it works. I had only twice the problem that the mouse stopped, I had to disconnect the Logitech Unifying adapter and reconnect it.

So my configuration:

XPS 1350 - production date 11/2015, with dell Wireless on board.
Dell Wireless on, but without using it
Dell Bluetooth on board, but cut of by Bios (i do not need it at all)
docking station on the left side of the notebook, the cable goes around the docking station (so that I have the power button on the rights side)
I use Ethernet, 1 Gbit connection
Dell 3014 Monitor, connect through Display port (2560*1600, 59 Hz)
USB Logitech microphone connected at the docking station
the monitor has an integrated USB hub, so I connect the docking station also with this hub
as written on the monitor I have, on the rights side, connected the Logitech unifiyin adapter. I use a Logitech K810 keyboard and a Performance MX mouse.

works!

Of course I do not want to say that therefore this is a good product - not event decent. I hope, as everybody, that Dell we change it. We sell Dell products for about 15 years - I do not remember that there was 1 single product that was so bad. The only good thing: we did not sell it to any customer, otherwise I am sure that i had loose the customer.

And I am still convinced, that with my previous notebook (a HP Elitebook 8440p with the standard docking station) I had a clearer video that I have now.

Maybe this can help somebody too.

The TB15, at the cost of a decent entry model laptop, is a total nightmare. After over six months, I have finally found a partial answer: get the Startech.com TBT3TBTADAP TB3 to TB adapter and plug it in to a legacy TB1 or TB2 dock. Everything works. 100 CAN$ down from Newegg. The downside of course is that you get 4K at 30hz, but for now I am happy something actually works!

I have already (of course) been updating drivers many and multiple times, so I have all the stuff ready. Plug in the adapter, Windows immediately sees it and the TB dock and asks to allow them to be used. Let it install the drivers and.. it worked...I plugged in the audio and it switched to the dock's audio, no questions asked. with the TB15, when it worked, it was like, pleading for it to happen.

Had I known this would be such a horror schlock would never have bought the XPS and kept on plugging away with my old setup.

XPS9550 with startech tb3->TB, Caldigit TB1 dock, has audio, Ethernet, DP to 27 inch Dell 4K mon, USB2 SSD external HD. It is all working. Only thing is that the backup to the SSD is a bit slow..

well, while there are workarounds there is still no solution and no clear statement from Dell which is totally  unacceptable. I bought the Precision 5510 and two tb15 exactly because of the promise of the end of cable mess on the table.
