change the motherboard of a dell studio 1555
Hello everybody,
My dell laptop studio 1555 is old now and i would like to improve its performance.
I would like to change the motherboard with the dell studio 1558's motherboard, in order to change the ram to ddr3, the graphic card and of course the microprocessor. Is it possible? Because 1555 and 1558 seems to be the same. I know that I will have to change the heatsink. Do other incompatibilities exist? Thanks a lot.

There could be any number of problems in doing this. If you want the upgrade, buy a 1558 or a new system - retrofitting a different board is an invitation to a nightmare.

SIMON2A, did you do it? Did it work? I'm thinking of doing the same.

Not yet. I heard that some motherboards are incompatible with i7, so I'm still hesitating.

I know this thread is old, but have you moved on with the swap? I just recently spoke with someone at PartsPeople.com and they told me "Any of the 1558 motherboards will support the first generation i7 CPU's" I'm sincerelly considering this myself. The cheaper DDR3 ram is definitely enticing as well as the ATI graphics.

It becomes a cost/benefit question - if you really purchase a mainboard, CPU, and all new RAM you'll spend several hundred dollars on used parts with at best a 90-day warranty.
If the total cost of the parts exceeds 50% of that of a new system, it's not worth the effort.

Such a response to that other person made a lot of sense. I have a Dell Studio 1555 7i processor, with Full HD display, etc... Dell replaced my initial "Studio 15" purchase with this upgraded 1555 since they did not have one with my other specs.
Anyways, my point is that I love it, but seems I may need to replace the motherboard.
The number provided on my motherboard reads CN-04DKNR-48643-06F-0297-A01. A dell "chat" representative associated it with a shorter version number 4DKNR. Looking for a motherboard replacement with 4DKNR leads me to motherboards on Studio 1558 laptops instead of my 1555. Can I be owning a Studio 1555 with a motherboard more comonly in a 1558?
Any suggestions? Dell doesn't always keep track of what they replace with refurbish parts.
