does XPS 15 touch support 2 hard drives?

Jump to solution

I am interested in buying a Dell XPS 15 touch but wanted to ensure it could support 2 hard drives before I do so. I notice that the standard configuration supports both a 32GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive so I assume that to mean there is space in the XPS 15 touch for 2 hard drives.

My ultimate goal is to replace the hard drives that come with the XPS 15 with 2 after market 1TB SSDs.

Can an XPS 15 support this configuration? Are there are other models I should be looking at instead?

mSATA is a small  PCI express card - it is not a 2.5" SSD.

The system has internal space for only one 2.5" drive - yes, you can have one mSATA and one 2.5" drive - you CANNOT have two, 2.5" drives.

mSATA SSD:

2.5"" SSD:

The other thing about this model:  if you order it with the larger capacity battery (91 WHr), you can ONLY have a single mSATA SSD - the larger battery blocks the spot used by the 2.5" drive so that it cannot be used.  You must order it with the smaller 61 WHr battery in order to be able to use the 2.5" drive bay.

I am happy to report that it IS possible to have two 1TB storage devices in an XPS 15 Touch. I purchased an XPS15 Touch which arrived yesterday. I replaced the 32GB mSATA device with a 1TB mSATA card and configured the machine to boot from the mSATA instead of the hard drive. This is just marvelous! The machine is brilliantly fast now and I still have the original 1TB hard drive.

Be advised that there are a lot of steps to follow to pull this off (e.g. turning off RAID, cloning the hard drive, etc). Check out some wikis and blog posts to get the instructions before trying it yourself.

The answer is no - it does not. One of the drives is a standard 2.5" and the other is a card (mSATA).  If you want two 1T SSDs, one must be mSATA and the other a 2.5" drive.

Sorry, but you've lost me. Can't you get SSDs that fit in standard 2.5" eSATA drive bays? Couldn't you put one SSD in the 2.5" slot and the other SSD in the mSATA slot?

Are there other Dell laptop models that would better support 2 SSDs?

@EJN63- Thanks! So it is possible to have 2 1TB SSDs in the XPS 15 touch (one mSATA and one eSATA). Are there any other Dell laptops I should consider which would support 2 SSDs?

SuperSniglet do you have any images of the inside of your machine as 'proof' that it works. Dell Support is telling me that with Touch, you cannot have two drives.

You're replying to a thread that's almost three years old.  Are you asking about the old XPS L5xx model in this thread, or about the 2017 model XPS 9560?

The newer XPS 15 will support two devices ONLY if you choose the smaller battery at purchase.  If you buy the system with the larger battery, you can use only a single M.2 format SSD.  The battery consumes the space needed for a 2.5" drive.

For the record, is exactly the same for the M5510.
