file recovery after defrag removes all files

had a message  to ckdsk  of colume of c before I could defrag. Did so then ran defrfag. all files now missing although programd still in place just empty.

Is there a way to recover say my Document file at least?

i tried to make a backup several times using a DVD but could never get it to work.

Bought an extenal drive from Logitech never could get computer  to recognize it and repeated requests for help to logitech went unanswered
