my laptop crashed a month ago and a mte re-installed the drivers and os.

my monitor properties are generic PnP monitor on mobile intel(r) 965 express chipset family.

i have tried to install: amd m82 rev: a00

am i using the right driver? anytime i try to run it i get the ATI- Catalyst install manager but then i get an error stating  "failed to find any installable components!"

You'd have to replace the screen with a WUXGA panel.

When you installed Windows, did you install the Dell notebook system software and chipset driver?  Without these in place, the video driver will not load.

the 1440x900 resolution is the pixel count on the screen. You could set a custom resolution, but you can't generate pixels out of nothing. Cheapest solution is an external monitor with 1920x1200. If you get a large enough monitor, you will be able to take advantage of the higher resolution. High resolution is wasted on smaller screens. My E1705 has 1920x1200, but we really can't take full advantage because everything is too small. Same with my 15: M1530 with 1680x1050. Definition is great, but you just can't use normal displays because of the small size. They are both great for high def video though.

I am considering purchasing  a XPS 16 with the 1920 x 1080 HD screen. Like you I am concerned about the tiny fonts on a 1080 display ( It works out to something like 132 pix/in ). How is the sharpness on these screens  at a lower ( non native ) resolution when viewing web pages?

The other option is an Inspiron 1545 with 1366 x 768 but the text is a little too big on that and it takes a lot of scrolling to view web pages.

Sure wish manufacturers would offer 4:3 ratio displays again... sigh...

Most things can be enlarged to allow for easier viewing. All windows features are sizable. Browser pages can also be expanded to larger size if needed. There are, however, some apps that don't adjust, such as MS Office apps. While the size of the text in documents are always scalable, the program features, menus, task bars, etc., are not, so sometimes it is difficult to read some items. However, the excellent resolution of the 1920x1080 screen is worth occasional squinting. You get a lot of desktop area to use.

Any scaling except the native resolution will result in distorted screens.
