inspirion n5110 RAM upgrade - is 1600 MHz compatible?

my current ram is 3GB (2 + 1) 1333 MHz . can i put 2 x 4 GB 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-12800 ram aftr removing the current ram.

will it be better if i just get new 4gb 1333 mhz chip and replace it with 1gb chip to give me 6gb ram in total?

Hi Ankit_n,

The Dell Inspiron N5110 / 15R has 2 memory SODIMM slots on the system board. The system accepts a memory capacity ranging from 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB. The memory type accepted is DDR3 1333 MHz SODIMM only. The computer supports a maximum of 8GB of memory when installed with two 4GB DIMMs.

The System is not compatible with 1600 MHz clock speed Memory.

Hi Ankit_n,

Kingston Value Ram Low Voltage Series DDR3 4 GB Laptop (KVR16LS11/4) is not compatible with your system has its clock speed is 1600 MHz, you can add a 4 GB memory of clock speed 1333 MHz.

Is this also true for a Inspiron N5010? I just bought a Kingston 4 GB 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-12800, 1600 Mhz, 1.35V, and it does not seem to work.

The OS won't boot and the Memtest86 utility crashes almost instantly with that stick alone inside the laptop (while it works perfectly with my old stick in)

I thought that using a stick with 1600 Mhz in a laptop that supports 1333 max meant that the stick would be used at 1333, not that it would *not work at all*.

Thank you for your help.

The speed isn't the problem - 1600 should be fine.  Is this Kingston's "good" RAM (KTD) or is it "value" RAM (which is generally much sloppier in tolerance)?

Well, Ravi, why then http://www.crucial.com/ test says that

DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V •

are compatible with Dell Inspiron N5110?

Why Crucial test shows that DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • is compatible with Dell Inspiron N5110

While the RAM will work, don't expect it to run any faster than 1333 MHz RAM - the CPU sets the RAM speed, and no CPU this system will support is capable of running RAM at 1600 MHz.

Guys, anybody had any luck using 1600Mhz RAM on Dell N5110? Did it worked? Did it show in System?

You're looking for a specific answer that it'll run at 1600 MHz - which it won't.  If you have a Celeron, i3 or i5 CPU it'll clock down to 1066 MHz.  If you have an i7, it'll clock down to 1333 MHz.

Will it work?  Yes.  Will it work at 1600 MHz - no.
