On restarting 15R 5520, laptop just beeps forever (bout once a second). First time it happened it was after laptop had been running for about 3 hours. I tried removing battery etc. Eventually it started up. a few weeks later when I rebooted/cycled power, again nothing but beeps ... Today same thing, laptop was not hot, it had only been on a few minutes, and I decided to reboot .... beep beep beep ..... again after many different tries it powerd up .
what should i do?
The beep code you are describing is described by the manual as "BIOS ROM checksum in progress or failure" and is said to be caused by a "System board failure, covers BIOS corruption or ROM errors." I would remove and replace the CMOS battery to reset BIOS. See if that works. How to do that can be found here: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-15r-5520_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
Hey Brandon, where in the heck do you get beep codes? I have an Inspiron 15R (5537, Mid 2013), and none of the downloadable manuals for this model lists the beep codes. Thanks in advance!
Here is the page with many diagnostic error codes, beep codes, and more troubleshooting codes: en.community.dell.com/.../3624.beep-codes-and-psa-diagnostic-chart
I was still getting beeps on restart, would keep cycling power, and it would eventually reboot. then I stopped ever shutting it down or doing updates etc, and it would continue to run just fine (and I ordered a similar Dell laptop so I could swap out drives). Eventually, I powered it down and it would never start, just beep beep .... about every second forever .... sigh.
So i followed the youtube directions on replacing the CMOS battery. Old battery measured 3.182v, new battery 3.279v. Reassembled, and not surprisingly new CMOS battery did NOT help ... still beep beep beep ...
? bad fan? bad motherboard? tough luck?
