problem with USB sockets Inspiron 1300
The USB sockets on my laptop work very slowly if I plug in a camera or an external harddrive. It has been like this for a long time now and they used to work faster. I don't really know what to do about it. Any suggestions would be great!

I suggest testing the USB ports on a simpler device and see if the problems continue. Try an external USB mouse or Keyboard and see if you have difficulties with those devices. I would also check to see if there is a difference in performance between USB ports, does devices while connected to a particular port seem to run slower then when they do connected to other ports? All this indicates possible hardware defect and you may need to have the notebook serviced to get them working correctly.
It doesn't have to be defective hardware though. I would check the USB hubs listed in device manager and make sure that Windows is not set to cut power to them to save battery power. Click start then control panel then system properties, then device manager (if you have XP click hardware then device manager). Look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers and then root hubs. You will likely have more than one listed. Right click on them and choose properties, then click on the power management tab and make sure that "allow the windows to turn off this device to safe power" is unchecked.
Other than that I can only suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the camera and external hard drive and see if that helps performance.
