reinstalling windows on laptop inspirion 6000

hello,

I am trying to reinstall my windows XP home edition on my inspirion 6000 laptop and when I enter the product Id, it says, "The product Id you entered is not valid."

Now I do have two computers and each came with its own disk, but can only find one windows XP disc.   Could it be the wrong disk??  If so what happens If I lost the original disk?   What can I do to fix the problem?  I know it is not the product Id as I have checked it five times.    Any help would be appreciative.

Catacus,

If you are using a Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD, you should not have to enter a Product ID as Dell XP systems are preactivated.  If you are using a Microsoft Retail Windows XP disk, then you must enter that CD's Product ID.  You can request a backup Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD here:  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=555&docid=52002&doclang=en&l=en&s=biz

Had you not attempted a clean install of Windows you should have been able to restore your system to its "as-shipped" condtion by following the procedure outlined in Step 3 or these instructions:  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz&docid=DSN_181316&isLegacy=true

If you did not completely repartion your drive, you can recover access to the the Dell PC Restore by Symantec using Dan Goodell's DSRFIX program which is described here:  http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.shtml

Hope this information helps.

Tony
