screen goes black after start "sometimes"

inspiron 8600 2GB xp homevz broadband SP3

Purchased new in late 2004.

Problem started yesterday.  I go online do some email searching or checking things on google or Yahoo or going to Expression web and then all of a sudden screen goes black.  Not blue.  Black.

I shut off computer using on/off button then like 10 seconds later start it up again and and it happens again.  So far never more than 3 tries and this time as I write it is working as it always has just fine..

Oh.  I don't use battery. I removed battery a year ago and just use power supply connected in back.

Don't know what else to tell you.  Oh I did do a spybot check.  I also run avast.  I have 26Gig used and 26 available and try to keep start up a minimum.

I did look for error messages and found something about MCSTRM not being found at start lots of times and way more than times screen went black though on same days it went black which is yesterday and today and I don't use Real Player.

Help?

Hello, I am not a certified microsoft person, but I will try to help you, any one certified can jump in and take over at any time if they feel im not up to par in anywway.

I  would like for you to search for the file  MCSTRM using the technique described here on Microsoft's website .

so far all I know is MCSTRM.sys needs to be located in you windows 32 folder and belongs to Real Player, also many viruses like to use this name of file to mask themselves so its important for us to find out exactly where this file is, if it is still on your computer at all.

lets begin.

I ran search for mcstrm and nothing found.

My computer has been on since my first posting about an hour ago and screen has not gone black and surfing is working really fast as usual with this broadband.

thanks

Do you have HiJack this installed on the computer?

If not you can obtain a copy here

Run a system scan and save a log file to your hard drive, then post the log here maybe that will yield some important information.

In the meantime while I try to figure out the log try this program here , do a scan and then click the clean buton this program has a good tendency to fix up the registry pretty well with indows XP, as that could also be a fix to the problem, also  I recommend you uninstall it right after the scan and clean.

Malwarebytes is sometimes better and can be downloaded here simular scan and fix function. (also recommended uninstall after use)

also this looks like not the first time this haptened, doing a simple search engine search found many others with the same problem and no solution.

I will also not post anything for you to do that might cause harm to the computer and If I cant solve this in the end I will just tell you so.

You can definatly place a checkmark next to:

I know for sure those up there are not good and recommend starting Hijackthis Clicking on "None of the above, just start Hijackthis" doing a scan and placing a checkmark next to those entries up there, then finally repair.

also I would run one or both of the programs I recomended, there is a high chance they will fix your remaining problems as long as they are software based.

P.S I would NOT be unable to single you out to a single person any where in the world with the information provided.

I can see myself going into Bestbuy and telling person at repair desk about all you suggested I do and this person saying would you also jump off a cliff if someone told you?

I deleted those hijack files.

then went to AWCset and cleaned everything with this report

Online Report Beta

The Errors Fixed: 32499
The Space Freed: 1 MB files removed.

Your Computer Health and Performance

After:

Oh I should say prior to starting this new session I had to do 2 where screen went black after booting and working on something.

I'm going to your next and last suggestion to run.

And am I suppose to remove AWCset up from my computer when I am done or leave it there and check my system every so often.  It was a lot faster than spybot or Avast in not only looking but finding things it thought I could do without.

after last message I went for lunch.  I'm here in California. Came back and read above message at 12:41 and tried to reply except screen went black.  here it is 12:53.  some 12 minutes later and 3rd attempt to go on line.

When screen goes black no error message.

At least I got this far after having deleted all those HiJack files and All of what AWCset deleted.

I did not try Malwarebytes as after I deleted all of AWCset I wanted to see if that would be enough.  Apparently it wasn't .

I'll try Malware now so long as screen stays up.

I personally recommend uninstalling AWCset since I don't think the update works any longer.

Malwarebytes on the other hand has updates and if you think its best to keep one around then it would be malwarebytes only and not both.

I would personally Uninstall both and keep the downloaded Malwarebytes file archived for later possible use.

Now try to recreat the stuff that you do to have the screen problem set off on you or just write once more of what haptens and maybe a few copys of the exact error messages you recieve with the black screen (if any).

Also It wouldnt hurt to try an external monitor (if available) and see if the problem shows up on that as well.

P.S Please do not jump off of any cliffs, if this is to much or you think Im doing something incorectly, anything at all, please let me know, thank you.

not OK.  Same problem however after typing inspiron 8600 black screen into google I am not only user with a similar problem.

Either I need an inverter or backlight.  It takes 3 attempts it seems to get to where I am now if screen doesn't go out on me before I can send this.

Screen is not black as I said.  If I look really close there is an image in behind all that black.

I saw that also, but I was realy hopeing it was NOT hardware lol, in the end I was thinking on how to break into the touchy subject.

But im very glad you have come to solution and a conclussion for this.

I would have recommended eBay and use the money towards the purchase of a new under at least 1 year warranty laptop.

Have you found a guide on how to replace it on your notebook or did you have something else in mind?

It was ebay and for 14.68 delivered to Los Angeles coming from seller in Brooklyn.  Seller in Brooklyn probably bought them from China.

Looks like a little work to replace.   some sights saying maybe 20 minutes.  I'm sure it will be a lot less work than pulling a radiator from a BMW, which I have never done but worst that can happen I'll have to buy a new computer.

to send this email it took 4 tries to not see black screen and so far so good on this session and

I went to AWCset up web site and there are a lot of happy users.  I went back to it and did some changes according to suggestions at site and my computer now takes about a minute to get from password to email screen.  It use to be about 3 minutes.

I'll let you know what happens when I replace back light  or if I can replace back light.

thanks

OK this is like really strange.

Last night after writing above I thought why not look for backlight, put everything back and then when bulb arrives, I received an email this morning saying it was mailed, I would know where to put it.

So I remove little round rubber pads, take out screws, using a knife carefully separate frame from screen, power removed. then remove some more screws so screen comes off, detached cable and a small chip and screen is free.

I put screen face down on a towel and start looking for black lite.  Can't tell if is inverter that chip on bottom of screen side or top of screen.  I give up and think I need to go back on line to see if back light is under top or bottom metal hinge. I'm thinking it is on top.

I replace cable and chip into inverter and with only two screws secure screen back to lid.  Not putting on frame and it is still off.  Then thinking lets see what happens when I turn computer on.

This is where strangeness begins.  It starts up in like a minute, I'm sure because of AWCsetup and then it doesn't crash.  Amazing. I look for a video on removing backlight and only found someones who was fixing a wet screen nothing just about back light.

then this morning.  Same thing.  It goes from sign in to Web in about a minute.  I use Firefox and thunderbird and here I am so far no black screen and look at all this typing.  Other than doing what I did Have no clue why it is working and no black screen.  So far.  And if things continue as they are I am not about to install bulb when it arrives though I will replace frame.
