:^/ The service manual will say for sure, but as a good bet, memory should be added in matching pairs. So, if you want to go to two gigabytes, you'll have to remove your 512mb module, and place two 1GB modules in.

If it's confirmed that it only accepts 2GB, why on earth would you want to add an extra 512MB stick in the second slot, if it can't be used?

Investigate what chipset is used and check online to see what it supports. I have an Inspiron 1501 which states the max Ram as 2 GB also but I am running along fine with 4 GB....

I have an Inspiron 6400. I bought 2G of RAM (2 x 1G) from store on eBay. I put them both in and tried to start my computer, lights above keyboard came on, but it lags, doesn't boot and then lights go out. I removed the chips and put the original 512Mb back in it's original location and the computer same issue. Any ideas?

Hello,
The 6400 has a 2GB memory max. No if, and, or but.
Each memory slot has a max of 1GB. So, adding a 2GB chip to the system will prevent the system from starting. If you like, you can read about Dell computers and their RAM requirements at the memory pages of my web site.

Well, I have a Inspiron 6000 with a 2gb chip in slot a and it works and sees all of the memory. So what about the 1 gig per slot only?

Hello,
Since both the Dell site and the crucial memory site list a 1GB max per slot, I suggest that you run a full set of memory test like Memtest.
It would be a bad thing to think that the RAM was working OK, if in fact it was not and corrupted your data or install.

Dell an Crucial said it doesn't make it a fact. Sorry, but that is the truth. Dell just posted what they tested the system with, Crucial just parrots what Dell tells them is compatible. Dell and Crucial also stated the same for the Inspiron 1501 and I have been running my Inspiron 1501 with 4GB for well over a year. ( 2GB in each slot ) for over a year and it passes Memtest ( 24 hour run ) and Windows Vista memory test ( 24 hour run ).
Note you have to be careful what memory type you install as notebooks can be finicky about the type used. I do agree about running a memory test for an extended time period to ensure that it is working as designed. The chipset type will tell you how much ram it should support.
