vostro 1720 battery not charging

Windows XP, I am using a Rayovac COM20077 19.5V 90W charger with a Royovac COM10403 14.4v 5200mAh Li-Ion battery.  This has worked for at least a year and recently, the battery stopped charging.  The laptop will work as long a I plug in the power chord.  It will work with only the battery except the battery will discharge to "dead" because the it will not charge.  Interestingly, the when I plug in the charger, the green battery light comes on for about 3 seconds then goes out.  Likewise, the battery "power meter" shows battery charging for about 3 seconds and goes out as well.  I have tried two "new" batteties and a dell charger; nothing will make the battery charge.  Any ideas?  Thanks, Harvey

Check the BIOS setup (F2 at powerup).  Is the AC adapter recognized, or is it listed as "unknown"?

It says:  AC Adapter Type, None.

Bios Version A04

Thanks for the reply.  Someone spoke of using Fn-F2 and Fn-F3 to turn on/off the battery charger. At any rate, I tried this and nothing happens.

First try:  a new OEM Dell adapter.  If that too isn't recognized, replace the DC jack:

If that fails to solve the issue, replace the mainboard.

Okay... the pc normally use 90w ac adapter. .. but i just plugged in a 65w and the BIOS doesn't see the errors...must this be the DC jack  ?

That's the next suspect.  Replace the DC jack -- if that doesn't solve the issue, it's a bad charge circuit - meaning a mainboard replacement (which given the 8-year age of the system, likely isn't going to be a cost-effective repair to do).
