.AVI Playback from Hard drive

I have a Inspiron 6000 with a problem I have not run across before.  Whenever playback of an .avi file is attempted from the local hard drive(C: )  through Windows media player, the video and audio is choppy.

- Playback of the same .avi file from a USB memory stick is fine.

- Playback of the same .avi file from another computer across a wireless connection is fine.

- Playback of other video files (.mpg, .vob, etc.) from the hard drive is fine.

- Harddrive has been defragged, even though it said it wasn't required.  It did not make a difference.

I have searched everywhere and can't seem to find anywhere to begin to troubleshoot this problem.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well I figured it on my own.

The transfer mode on the primary controller was changed from Ultra DMA Mode 5 to PIO mode.

Just posting it here in case it helps someone else out.

Thanks.
