I am planning to buy New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000. I would want to replace the harddisk with SSD by next year or so. But i wanted to know if i can have SSD along with hard disk in this laptop.
I wanted both good performance along with large storage. So i was wondering if i can have two disks at once.
Thanks in advance
Solved! Go to Solution.
You can't install two standard 2.5" drives, no. You can on some models, install an mSATA drive (mini-PCI card). if you want that option you must purchase the system that way - if you don't order the mSATA drive, the system will be built without the mSATA connector.
Okay. And mSATA drive would be my SSD that i will attach. In case i have mini-PCI card i wont have to touch my existing hard disk on the system. Is it so? and which one would be the primary disk out of the two?
By the way this is the system i would be buying. I doubt if that comes with mini-PCI card.
mSATA and mini-PCI express have the same form factor but are electrically different. It doesn't look like any of the newer Inspiron 7000 series models have mSATA connectors -- the older 3rd generation ones did, though.
If you want an SSD along with a hard drive, you'll need to consider an XPS system - not an Inspiron.
Thanks for the response.
It would be great if you could suggest me a way to integerate a SSD cache if not SSD disk to this laptop.
Since there is no space for an mSATA SSD, you'd need to buy a standard 2.5" hard drive with a built-in SSD (so-called hybrid drive). Seagate and Western Digital both have several models of these (they're called SSHDs by both manufacturers).
If that is the case then why do they sell the high end Inspiron 15 7000 with a 256GB Msata drive? If it has a msata to start with then couldn't you add a sata drive in the 2.5" slot due to the msata drive using the msata slot?
Sorry , I'm a bit late, but this will help in future searches. I have the Inspiron 7737 , which only has 1 HD slot, so if you're willing to sacrifice your DVD Drive , you can buy a HD Caddy which replaces your DVD drive with a second HD / SSD , got mine for $15
