Dell XPS M1330 Digital Audio - 5.1 DTS/DD

Hi, With the XPS M1330 being quite a premium machine I would expect it to have a Digital SPFDIF connector or a dual analogue/digital jack on the headphone socket but according to the specification, this does not seem to be the case? Can the headphone jack be configured to output a digital audio signal that can be then fed into a 5.1 surround system? I realise it has HDMI output but again its not specified if this carries audio, and if it does if its just PCM etc. The problem I have then is my surround sound processor only have Coax and Optical TOSLINK inputs, the HDMI lead would have to be fed direct to my LCD TV. Would I have to buy some extra external soundcard to get Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 sound? Cheers, Mike

Well looking around, it seems this is not possible which is a shame. Could I install something like a Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Audio ExpressCard/54 card in the M1330? This has a SPDIF Optical output which will connect to my 5.1 system. Cheers, Mike

Has anyone got an experience of the Audigy X-Fi Notebook card on a Dell Laptop? Is there any audio/visual sync issues when using the Digital out on the soundcard? Cheers, Mike

Sound is coming out from hdmi also, tested. I saw some adapting cable in store: hdmi to dvi http://www.optimization-world.com/products/catid/4.html Or use adapters http://www.optimization-world.com/products/catid/13.html

Thanks for the idea but unfortunately, my Audio Processor has Optical Digital in or Coaxial Digital in, no HDMI. I would have to use the HDMI lead to go from the Laptop to the LCD TV anyway so it wont be possible to split the audio to the Audio Surround System. Thanks anyway, Mike
