Inspiron 1420 batteries not detected

Inspiron 1420, received 11/21/07. On boot, Dell logo comes up, followed by DOS text saying battery not detected, please attach AC (AC & batteries were both attached before booting).

Pressed F1 to continue, and after Vista 32 starts, it detects the battery as 100% fully charged. This happens to the 6 cell & 9 cell batteries. Occasionally after rebooting, it's just fine, but mostly it thinks the battery isn't there on booting, particularly after the laptops fully cooled down to room temperature.

I ran the full preboot evaluation, and nothing came up.

HELP!

Only one last suggestion, when you switch batteries are you using the same power supply for both?... or switching between both?..

Power down laptop and remove battery>replace battery and power on laptop.See if that helps.

That might be the problem,i believe the 6 cell batteries power supply is not the same volts as the 9 cell would be.And if you are using the 6 cell power supply for the 9 cell battery that might be why it is not recognized. When 9 cell is in,the laptop thinks it is still the 6 cell which is why you are getting the error message. You need to get the 9 cell power supply for the 9 cell batt. Then power down laptop make sure 6 cell is charged off the power supply for it,same for 9 cell, and then replace the 6 and it should be recognized. The 9 will be too  when charged off the power supply for it.

Well I'm using the highest recommended (90W vs 65W - both compatible). Past couple of days, things seem okay. Weird. Anyone else with this problem?
