Inspiron 1720 Video Card Upgrade Question

Hello,

I purchased a Inspiron 1720 a couple months back and had a question regarding upgrading my video card.  The card currently on the system is a Geforce 8400M GS 128 MB and I am aware that I can upgrade to the 8600 256MB.  Do you consider this upgrade worth the $130 dell wants for the refurbished card?  My current setup runs the games that I want to play, but I would like to squeeze out as much fps as I can out of this machine.

I have also read that the nvidia drivers aimed for Windows Vista systems have still not reached the performance levels achieved on XP systems.  Do you think I could achieve better performance by running XP on this laptop instead of Vista?

My system:

Windows Vista Home Premium

Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 @ 1.50 GHz

2.0 GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Inspiron 1720 Video Card Upgrade Question

Yes and yes.I would guess at least 20% performance increase with XP and the 8600 is a good bit faster than the 8400.Faster memory bus and more memory and more stream processors. If you game a lot would be a nice upgrade.
