No Desktop Icons

The computer is locked.  I enter my password to unlock the computer.  It appears that the computer accepts the password, but my desktop icons do not appear.  A blank blue screen with a white arrow .  I have tried F8 and CTRL+ALT+DEL -- Nothing.  When I shut the computer off, the Microsoft Windows says Preparing to Hibernate.  And, it goes into hibernation and a dark screen.  I want to see my desktop again.  Any thoughts, please...
