to connect inspiron 6400 to TV using VGA-HDMI cable

Can I connect the VGA output from my Inspiron 6400 to the HDMI input from my HDTV? Such cable exist on the market but I wonder what would be the quality of the image on my TV. My main objective is to view on the HDTV my video tapes which where unloaded to my hard disk.

Thank you

Vga is an analog output where as HDMI is a digital input. It will not  work without some sort of a convertor.

Without a converter for VGA to HDMI,  would it work for Toshiba model :32HV10E, 32" LCD TV ,  If I purchase online for the Dell - DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter  -  Manufacturer Part# : Dell Part# : 450-14607 ?

You don't have a Display Port on your laptop. What makes you think this would work for you????

My laptop is older model without HDMI port, the only choice is VGA port.

Yes, there is a difference. Looking at the picture of the part should have told you that.

You need a  VGA to HDMI converter box. Look for one at Newegg.com or Amazon.com

I bought a VGA to HDMI converter box, TV  display laptop is working fine now with 1024 x 768. :p

Just wonder those with HDMI port on laptop or Tablet, do they need a converter, if they want to display Laptop on TV.

Glad you have it working.

Newer devices with HDMI outputs don't need a converter box.

@ieee488: Thanks. So new laptop / tablet / Netbook with a HDMI port that allows it to connect directly to TV, saving of about $100 and efforts to buy the converter.  :p

It's lucky that my Inspiron 6400 is working fine with Toshiba model :32HV10E, 32" LCD TV and HD Video converter - VGA to HDMI. Just folllow TV manual for setting (take about 5-10 minutes  to figure out the TV must use remote controller, press the button of  "Menu"-> Press  "Input Source selection" button , then toggled to "HDMI" and press "OK" button), everything is plug and play, F8 for laptop to extend the desktop display to external device, in this case, TV). There is no audio problem, the sound from laptop to TV works perfect. It took me about 5-10 minutes to confirm that 1024 x 768 pixels is the best solution to display on 32" LCD TV.

I am trying to do that same. Inspiron 6400 is working well for what I am using and I dont want to upgrade it, while I would like to use my spare high res monitor with it that has only DVI input (only digital). It would be nice if the above user can post the model of the converter that he bought and was successful in using it with 6400.

thanks
