touchpad not working

I own a dell inspiron n5010. My touchpad works only till windows 7 boots up. After logging in , it fails to respond. The synaptis touchpad icon on the bottom right corner of the screen is having a red crossout mark. I am not able to enable the snaptis touchpad through the settings menu....any suggestions???
