DCU version 4.1.0 unable to retrieve system inventory information on Latitude E6230

I'm running Win 10 Pro, 64-bit OS on my Latitude E6230 and lately the Dell Command Update will not complete and displays: "unable to retrieve system inventory information." I've uninstalled & re-installed both Dell-Command-Update-Application-for-Windows-10_DF2DT_WIN_4.1.0_A00 and Dell-Command-Update-Application_P5R35_WIN_4.1.0_A00 execution files with no luck. Any suggestions please?

The issue with Dell Update started for me yesterday (7th April 2021) after having been working fine the day before. I'm using Dell Update 4.1.0 on an Inspiron 7570. I can't see any recent Microsoft Updates between it working on the 6th and stopping working on the 7th,

I recently noticed that all of our Dell Latitudes are having the same issue.

Is this a Windows 10 update issue?

What I've found out at least on our campus systems is the McAfee ENS 10.7 component known as the AMSI (AntiMalware Scan Interface) is causing our problem. This is a component of Threat Prevention as well. We have the option enabled, and set to Observe Mode via our ePO Server. As you would think, it shouldn't be performing any action on scripts (to some degree) just logging them. BUT that's not the case here, and it in fact is executing script blocking at least with DCU. But, the Threats aren't being logged into ePO either, which is a huge thing. Either is means that EndPoint/ePO is broken somewhere, or the DCU product is doing something extremely shady on their side and it's somehow avoiding the detection. Yet, McAfee is smart enough to somehow still block it??

As a workaround, disabling AMSI in ePO to filter to the clients, update client, reboot, problem solved. Or disable at the local level if you don't have ePO, reboot, problem solved as well.

Also, I'm gonna vent here. Was working with Dell Support and they told me I was reloading my OS wrong. Excuse me? I've been doing it this way for 3+years, and suddenly it's a problem. They say I need to use the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery method for their applications to work properly. Doing this method, added almost 2hrs of time to an OS reload, which is insane! Then, I STILL had to load DCU or SupportAssist to get latest drivers, and on top of that the OS that's loaded onto the system is the factory OS (1903, 1909, etc.) not including any potential Windows Updates. So I'm still stuck doing those updates also, Win Upgrades, etc. Here's the kicker, the problem still existed, until I found the AMSI issue.

I normally use the Media Creation Tool or Rufus and burn the respective ISO to thumb drive. Then boot to F12, load the USB Drive, etc.. slick the drive, wait..wait...and I'm at the OOBE in under 25mins TOTAL time. Go through all that, load DCU, drivers, Windows Updates, DONE. I'm in and out in about 1hr, with the LATEST Win10 (20H2 for instance), Windows Updates and all drivers.....

Dell do something shady?  Like making a known (to them) issue invisible to even their own ProSupport techs and their supervisors. Nah.

The issue is that InvColPC (C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\Service) is unable to produce the expected inventory xml.

No matter what outc file path I specify, no file is created. I tried disabling Windows Defender to no avail.

While we also are using McAfee ENS 10.7 as BAC1984 was discussing, I'm guessing not everyone is?

If we're blaming A/V, then Trend is doing it too.

We have many Windows 10 Dells of all shapes & sizes.

Command Update tanks on all of them now.
