Dell 7490 Sudden Freeze after Windows 10 20H1 (version 2004) Update - EventID: 41 Kernel-Power

I upgraded to Windows 10 20H1 update (version 2004) in my Dell 7490 with configuration:

  • BIOS v1.14
  • Intel Core i5-8350U
  • Intel UHD620 Graphics and Full HD non-touch display
  • 16GB RAM
  • M.2 2280 NVMe TOSHIBA 256GB
  • Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 802.11a/b/g/n/ac + Bluetooth 4.2

With different RAM combination (to ensure it's not RAM/RAM slot issue), PC suddenly freeze with no BSOD/error codes/dumps with very high temperature over keyboard (above CPU). Tested also with peripherals connected/disconnected, fan is working fine, BIOS tests are 100% pass. All drivers are up-to-date, all Windows updates are installed.

The only evidence I get is the Event viewer shows ErrorID: 41 (Kernel Power).

Latitude 7490 functional and stable with Airplane Mode turned on...bluetooth and/or wi-fi driver or settings issue?

Well, I think I managed to fixed it via the following:

  • Ran elevated command: sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

  • Ran the same command in Safe Mode with same results
  • Ran the elevated commands from normal boot:

dsim /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

dsim /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

dsim /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  • Then I ran again sfc /scannow twice and voila! Affected files repaired successfully and so far I have no sudden freeze issue.

  •  Files repaired by DSIM command:
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\mfmpeg2srcsnk.dll
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Photo Viewer\\PhotoViewer.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\wmpdxm.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\mfcore.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\wmidx.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\PhotoScreensaver.scr
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\wmp.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\mfmjpegdec.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\fveapibase.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\fveapi.dll
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Photo Viewer\\PhotoAcq.dll
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\\wmprph.exe
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\WMNetMgr.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\MsSpellCheckingFacility.dll
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink\\micaut.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\mfasfsrcsnk.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\mfds.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\mswmdm.dll
    • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\\mfmpeg2srcsnk.dll

Hi,

Check with inserting only single  RAM if u r using two RAM's.if the system freeze will be like, laptop screen will be halt at which ever stage is ur work. Then most likely it is issue with loosened RAM in slot.try to give slight pressure in the bottom where RAM touches the bottom cover and u will see the system freeze arise instantly, then mostly it's a RAM slot issue.do this test if it using single RAM too.

not a memory seating or 2-unit issue for me on my 7490.  Only fix was to revert back to Win10Pro version 1909.
