Laptop shuts suddenly after new battery

I have a 4 YO Latitude E5440. This week after finally died, I replaced the original battery with an OEM (LG). Since the new battery I started experiencing a new problem: about a couple of hours after use Windows 10 suddenly shuts down.
. The shutdown is not clean but not sudden either. It's as if Windows wants to power-off but unable to complete the process. I can see the ssd light doing some work for a few seconds. Event log says Windows rebooted not cleanly. There is no prior log for a reason.
. Happens while AC is plugged and battery fully charged.
. At one point I could barely see a pop up in the Windows notification saying something about windows losing connection with the battery.
. I ran both the Dell diagnostics in Windows using supportasssit and the Bios built-in diagnostics. No problems with new battery.
. I also completely reset the Bios (pulled both AC and battery, then pressed power button for 30 seconds).
. New Battery shows completely normal behavior.

Update:

It just happened again. This time I was able to capture the pop up just prior to shutdown: "dell cannot communicate with battery"
I found on some forums that it's recommended to remove the dell power management tools. and so I removed it just now.
Any insight?

OEM means Dell as the Original Equipment Manufacturer not LG. Unfortunately I could not find genuine Dell replacement batteries on Dell's website for your exact model and those from resellers are risky and/or scams and should be avoided. Since the laptop is 4-5 yrs old you might want to try removing the battery and using the adapter alone. It will be a desktop replacement until you can buy a new computer.

A search for the e5440 battery brought up this at Dell but 5440 is not in the compatible list.

You may also use the "Get Help Now" option at the bottom right to chat with a Dell technician right away.

Update: modified the power plan to do nothing when critical battery reached. This time the laptop did not shutdown. Instead I got the blue Windows message across the screen that the battery is critically low (indicated 0%). But, after a couple of seconds the warning disapeared and the battery level restored to 98%.

So, it seems the laptop does not like the new battery and sometimes looses the communication (as the message says). So, Going to replace the battery since I just got it. In the meantime, the fix is to stay with AC and set the power plan to do nothing in critical level.

I suspect that Dell did something to "not play nicely" with OEM batteries. Let's see how the replacement OEM works.

Welcome to the Dell Community @JakeH1

Your system has a "SMART" power system.

Your AC and battery are both "SMART" devices.

That is why for newer systems it is best to replace the AC and Battery with an "Original OEM AC and Battery"

Thanks for the note. I can't use it without a battery as I move about and sometimex the power plug gets loosen and I loose the power.

Plan to replace the 'after-market' battery with a Dell one.

I find it strange that dell does not offer it on its website. Getting it from another source does not grantee it's a genuine one.

@JakeH1

To just remove the battery and use it like a desktop until you purchase a new computer is not a solution and never will.

Hi

Got exactly the same behavior after my original battery died at LATTITUDE E5450 (shame on DELL - after 3 years only!).

Bought a Chinese but branded from Germany. Detected as Samsung SDI and "DELL battery: YES" by DELL Power Manager. Random shutdowns annoying and once I've noticed for milliseconds prompt like "critical battery level" while on AC and 100% charge. This helped me to find existing topic.

I'm also noticed that from time to time power indicator tells that AC is unplugged while it is not, for several seconds. Initially I thought that power connector is damaged, but removing the battery completely will bring the laptop to absolutely normal operation, no one power off were happened!

What helped me seems to be completely - changing in advanced power plan settings action when powered from AC but critical battery level from SHUT DOWN to NONE. Since that it is already several hours with no problems (before an hour at most).

I'm also, but may be with no necessarily, made thru regedit "do noting" on critical battery level while powered from battery.

The question is - does uninstalling DELL Command - Power Manager helped to somebody?

This same thing happens to me! It's so freaking frustrating, because I specifically bought A Dell OEM battery in order to prevent issues like this.

When I plug in the battery, Dell's inhouse software recognises it as a certified part, healthy, et cetera.

However, occasionally the laptop will randomly shut down while in use, and I've also noticed that small notification about the critical level.

I'm not sure who to complain to - Dell, for not supporting their own OEM parts or pulling an Apple by forcing you to buy directly from them, or the OEM manufacturer for making a part that's faulty (the battery level being misread).

What if I did replace it with an Original OEM Battery, and still have these issues?

HERE IS THE STORY AND THE REASONABLE SOLUTION:

I bought brand new as Unbranded/Generic two batteries for my two Dell Latitude laptops E6520 on E-Bay advertised as "6/9 Cell Battery For Dell Latitude E6440 E5420 E6430 T54FJ M5Y0X E6420 E6520" for about $25 each.
Batteries were tested fine by me with the discharge taking couple of hours as expected. I provided a positive feedback for the person selling them. He/she has 99% satisfaction rate.
Just after providing positive feedback to the seller, I noticed that my laptop went into hibernation with battery full & AC power adapter plugged in all the time (?!). About an hour later I noticed a very brief message either: "Your battery is very low" or "battery low", immediately after the laptop went into hibernation.
I contacted the seller and it has been three days and still no answer nor comments.
Again, power supply was connected all the time so I swapped the battery to the other one.
Same thing happen.
So I decided to swap power supplies as the other laptop has different power supply. Both Dell Inc but smaller one.
Same thing happen.
After reading this message board I decided to disable the action on "AC ON & Low Battery" to "do nothing" and no problem anymore.
To me this default setting (to hibernate) does not make any bloody sense. If you AC is ON and battery is low why would you want to hibernate ? Here in this forum some "genius" said to use AC and remove battery ?!
Also "very smart". To resolve a problem with new battery the solution is to remove the battery and do not use it ?!
It seems like new OEM or not batteries have occasional disruptions to communicate with the laptop and power supply but they work fine if you just work on battery only.

SO THE SOLUTION IS TO CHANGE DEFAULT SETTING:
In Windows 10:
Either click on battery icon, select "battery setting"
or Windows Icon, select "Settings", Sellect "System"
Then go to "Power & sleep"
Then "Additional power settings"
Then "Change plan settings"
Then "Change advanced power settings"
Then scroll down to "Battery", "Low battery action"
Then in "Plugged in" change from "Hibernate" (the stupid default) to "Do nothing"
It has been more than 48h since I changed this setting and no more unexpected "Hybernations". Only an occasional message on the screen "your battery is low". After you press OK battery status jumps back to 99% or 100%. I can live with that.

THIS IS A REASONABLE WORKAROUND SOLUTION WITHOUT ADVERSE EFFECTS OR RISKS.

Whether it is intentional push by Dell for you to buy new laptops and make it difficult to continue using your old one. And/Or coordination with Microsoft Windows 10 Developers to make default power option "stupid" to act on none original (OEM or not) Dell Battery - I do not know. It can also be just lack of thinking or understanding at Dell and/or Microsoft Engineers - I do not know.
What I know the outcome is the same. Customers like You and Me have to spend hours of troubleshooting to make our older laptops to funcion while Dell & Microsoft want to charge $99 or more for the first hour of support fixing their faults.

Bingo!

  • Thank you for the sequenced instructions. I followed them and my battery was already on that setting. The dell suddenly dies after I replaced the battery with a "genuine dell bttery." This built in obselescence doesnt seem to be as prevalent on apple laptops. But I absolutely hate Apple! Can someone create a reliable laptop for people working remotely?
  • Thanks again.

Same problem here.

Exact same problem. Tried changing settings as noted above, but they were already set to those specs. Did change the option to turn off the hard disk aftr 20 minutes and made it 1000 minutes. Still having a problem. No batteries are even available on Dell's site.

I have this problem too with my XPS 13 running on Windows 10.

I tried uninstalling the Dell Power Command software but it did not help, just once less pop-up box to tick.

I have changed the Windows power profiles as others have done to avoid hiberation when on AC power. In theory if on AC power the battery should never get to 0%, so it makes some sense for the default setting to be hibernate as it would indicate some problem is occuring. I have left hibertate on when on battery power because I don't want to risk loosing my work in these situations.

However the underlying problem is still there and needs resolving.

I will test whether this is a Windows/Dell issue rather than an hardware issue but running the laptop in BIOS for a while and see if the problem occurs or not.

My battery is no longer sold by Dell and Dell Support advised me to search OEMs...which is what I did. I got my replacement battery from a battery specialists (in store) and it is Dell Branded, made by SMP.

I think Dell need to resolve this issue if it's software related because I won't be buying any more Dell machines given that they don't sell their own replacement batteries either!
