Latitude 3420, stuck on firmware update
I restarted my dell latitude 3420 to update my firmware and it is stuck at: flash progress 0% saving manifest. I don't know what to do. It has been stuck for a while now.

It has just happened to my win11 3520 after using Dell Assistant to check for updates. Come on Dell get it sorted. There are a lot of unhappy customers now.

It happened to my Latitude 3420 TWICE: I got stuck on 0% "saving manifest" while updating the firmware. Update: Dell Latitude 3420/3520 System BIOS 1.23.2.
First time: I don't exactly remember what I did, but It ended badly. I had to make a full Bios recovery and reinstall Windows. I probably unplugged the power and tried to somehow force the reboot, besides the power button, probably pressing ctrl+alt+del or something. Then I don't remember, but It probably went into recovery mode after I chose the "wrong" options (see below).
Second time: at the "0% saving manifest" screen (with the power chord plugged in), I held the power button until the laptop rebooted (about 30 seconds). Then the system detected bios corruption and showed me some options. I chose "continue", then the system fixed itself, and then it went back to normal.

There's no need to unplug the power chord. Just hold down the power button of your Latitude 3420 for about 30 seconds (40, depending on your model) and it will reboot.

This is not a SOLUTION but rather a WORKAROUND. There is a big difference!

Holding the power button (even for minutes) does not power the laptop down for me. So this is a hit and miss at this point.

Please check @IMOperations solution:
Unplug the power and let the battery drain to force shutdown - it takes around 2 hours for a fully charged battery to drop below 50% for it to shut down.
Once shut down, plug the power back in and let it charge for about 10-20mins for the battery to reach over 50% then boot the machine back up. It will then initiate the BIOS recovery.
If you can't wait for 2 hours, you'll have to unscrew the back plate to disconnect the battery.

I found we cannot hold down the power button, but what I have found is really weird.
We have 5 of these 3420's that updated and failed, and I was so mad from not being able to hard shutdown by holding down the power button, that I started just tapping (rather pounding) on the power button for like 20 seconds while I turned and started reading an email. I then turned back around, and the stupid thing had actually rebooted. I thought I might have dreamed it, so on the 2nd 3420, I tried repeatedly (fairly fast and firmly) tapping the power button, and it worked too. I then tried it on a 3rd and it didn't work. I then tried a combination of holding down Ctrl (no idea if this actually had anything to do with it, just saw it in a forum someone suggested) and holding down the power button and then switching to repeatedly tapping the power button and that worked after about 5 attempts, maybe 1 minute of repeated trying those combinations.
I know it's weird and people will think I'm punking them, but it has worked on all 5 of mine. I can't explain it, but it powers off and reboots to BIOS recovery. Saved me from opening up the case and unplugging the battery.

I don't know why the Support hasn't posted this here yet but here it is:
The laptop has to be plugged in to power. Hold the power button for just over 30 seconds but not longer then 45 seconds. Release the power button. This should force the reboot / power the device down and exit the stuck FW upgrade.
Also, you might have to RESET BIOS DEFAULTS in order to achieve boot after all of this.
Hope it works for you.

Unplug the strength and let the battery drain to pressure a shutdown it takes around two hours for a completely charged battery to drop beneath 50% for it to shut down.
Once shut down, plug the energy lower back in and let it cost about 10-20mins for the battery to attain over 50% then boot the desktop lower back up. It will then provoke the BIOS recovery. If you cannot wait for two hours, you will have to unscrew the lower back plate to disconnect the battery.

As long as any normal person will take down this patch and debug it to avoid annoying users , you guys really doing nothing ? Really poor service
