Latitude 5420 - Black screen when starting from WD19 dock

Recently we have received 50 Latitude 5420 notebooks.

We are using them in combination with a WD19 dock and two P2419H monitors.

Now we are facing the following problem:

When the notebook is connected to the docking station in a turned-off state and boots up, you only get a picture on the two external monitors.

If you open the laptop, you only get a black screen.

The same happens when you simply disconnect the laptop from the docking station and want to work directly on the laptop. The only way to solve the problem is to shut down the laptop via power button and restart it.

However, if you start the notebook before connecting it to the docking station, this problem does not happen.

All drivers and the BIOS are up to date.
The drivers and firmware of the WD19 docking station are also up to date.

The notebooks run Windows 10 Enterprise x64.

If anybody else is facing this problem:

Dell has released a new display driver (version 27.20.100.9510) for the 5420 that resolves it.

We tried reaching you on a private message asking for the Service Tag number to ascertain the warranty but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.

You did a Custom Test on the hard drive in Dell Online diagnostic tests?

I just found out, that this is a massive issue in the newer versions of the Intel UHD graphics driver!

It is working perfectly with version 27.20.100.8853.

As soon as you install the newer version 27.20.100.9415, you always get a black screen when starting the notebook from the docking station!

Please check this as soon as possible, this is absolutely critical!

Here is another thread with a description of the exact same problem, also solved by a new graphics driver:

Howdy there,

I'm responsible for deploying a rather large fleet of these systems at my facility. All Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2, latest drivers and firmware of course.

We're encountering the exact same issue with the WD19 docks, both the thunderbolt and USB-C versions, so I'm pleased to see that you've come to the same conclusion as I have, the newer 9415 driver is causing the issue.

Here's to hoping that Dell and Intel get this sorted out sooner rather than later.

Yeah this needs to be fixed as soon as possible, indeed.

As a workaround you can deactivate the Option "Enable Lid Switch" in the BIOS.

You can find it in the category "Power"
