Latitude 7490 and Monitor 3440x1440 (21/9) compatibility

I have a Latitude 7490 and it is connected to an external monitor 24 inches 1920x1080.

I want to buy a monitor 3440x1440 (21/9), a 34 inches. Will it work ? I can connect directly to the HDMI port of the laptop, or through my WD15 dock preferable. Thanks for your replies.

@laffilippe  A 3440x1440 display might work through a WD15, but if it works at all, it would only be if that was the ONLY display connected to the WD15.  The WD15 and the Latitude 7490 both only support DisplayPort 1.2/HBR2 over USB-C, and since the WD15 also sets up the USB-C link to carry USB 3.x data, that means you only have half of a DP 1.2 interface worth of bandwidth available.  That won't be enough for 3440x1440 and 1920x1080 together, and again it might not even be enough for 3440x1440 on its own.  I'm just not sure about that resolution.  This all assumes you want to use the standard 60 Hz refresh rate.

In terms of the HDMI port, the Latitude 7490's HDMI output only supports HDMI 1.4.  I'm not sure that's enough bandwidth for 3440x1440 either.  HDMI 1.4 can run 2560x1440 60 Hz and 4K 30 Hz, but I don't know about 3440x1440 60 Hz.

The only other way to run a 3440x1440 display through a docking station would be to get a Thunderbolt 3 docking station like the WD19TB.  That would tap into 4x more video bandwidth than the WD15.  But in addition to needing a new dock, you'd have to make sure that your system actually supports Thunderbolt 3, since that was optional on the Latitude 7490, not standard.

Just so it is documented for others that may also have this question (like I had when I wanted to buy a UWQHD screen): I'm using a U3421we screen and can confirm 3440x1440x60hz (x 8bit, 10bit are not supported) when using a DisplayPort cable, so the WD15 docking station supports it. It's my only external display. The WD15 is connected to an XPS 15 9500.
