Problem installing newer version AMD graphics Driver

Jump to solution

Hello, I have a problem with my Dell laptop... I have a Latitude e6540, whenever i try to install a newer amd driver and i restart the laptop, the Dell logo appears and then the screen becomes completely black and freezes there.... i tried this multiple times, always the same, i realized this happened because i got the driver file directly from amd website but the problem is the one on the dell website is an ancient version of the driver (Version 15.201.1101) https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=CYT1R&osCode=WT64A&produc... while the newest one on amd is (Version 19.1.2), https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-hd/amd-radeon-hd-8000m-series/amd-radeon-hd-8790m...

Laptop graphics drivers are specifically tweaked by the manufacturer for the motherboard configuration. That's why you always have to use the driver supplied by Dell.

The driver from Dell's support site is "ancient" because the E6540 is a 5-6 year old model originally designed for Windows 7 and Dell is not updating drivers for it. The drivers direct from AMD, NVIDIA and sometimes even Intel will seldom work.
