WD15 with 7480 doesn't recognize plugged in audio devices
So the issue in short:
One of my colleagues has the following setup:
Dell 7480 which is connected to WD15 using Type-C. The issue is that the docking station doesn't recognize any kind of audio device (headphones, stereo speakers) plugged in the 3.5 mm jacks (front and rear). When we plug the headphones in the laptop, it recognizes them and all is fine.
I updated the drivers for the audio drivers but nothing changed.
Let me know if you need more information.

Do you see the popup dialog when connecting something to the dock audio jack? What do you see under Control Panel > Sounds > Playback? Make sure you're viewing Control Panel in Small/Large Icon view, not Category view.

I have the same issue - If I plug my speakers into the jack on the WD15, I get the popup asking what I just plugged in (speakers vs. headphones), but I get no sound and the Windows sound troubleshooter says nothing is plugged in.

In the control panel>Sounds it shows the default device as Realtek Audio and will not let me select Realtek USB Audio as the default. I have a set of Altec Lansing VS2220 powered speakers plugged into the jack on the docking port.

@JRas if you go to Control Panel (make sure it's in Small or Large Icons view, not Category view) and select Sound, which Playback device is set as the default? Make sure the Realtek USB Audio device is set as the default while the dock is connected and something is plugged in, otherwise Windows might still be trying to route audio to the system's built-in audio interface. If you've already done that and you're seeing the "What did you plug in?" popup but still not getting any audio after selecting an audio output device such as headphones/speakers, then I'm not sure what to suggest next. What are you plugging in?

@JRas ok, I just checked this by plugging my own 7480 into a WD15 and the Realtek USB device is initially grayed out with a "Nothing plugged in" message, but once I plug in my headphones and select the correct option at the pop-up dialog, it becomes available. My only suggestion at this point would be to update (or uninstall and reinstall) the Realtek USB Audio driver and update the firmware on the WD15 if you haven't done those things already. Both of those are available here. And maybe update the BIOS on your 7480, although I would admittedly be surprised if that resolved this particular issue.

Ya, that's the path I am heading down now. Just downloaded all the available driver updates and noticed that the Realtek USB Audio was among them. Thanks

What finally fixed it for me was making sure I was selecting "Headset - Earbuds" in the MaxxAudioPro popup when you plug something in to the jack on the front of the WD15 dock.
For some reason I wasn't getting this popup before, but after updating all drivers (I think the Realtek driver for the dock was the key one), I started getting this popup.

This solved it for me too. Except on my the popup had the option "Headphones / Headset". Headphones was blue and Headset was white. I didn't realize you could click on "Headset" to make that go blue (see screenshot below). Once I did that and hit OK on the popup, the input source "Realtek USB Audio" showed up as an option in my Sound settings.
