WD19 docking stations - network dropout, USB dropout across multiple models

We are facing issues with WD19s losing Ethernet connections pretty consistently and also USB dropping out randomly throughout the day.

This happens with our latitude 5400 laptops.

The issue persists after we had the motherboard and other parts replaced, 3 new WD19's, and fresh installs of OEM image and latest BIOS and drivers on laptop and dock.

The issue does NOT occur with the WD15 dock and 5400 latitude.

Dell indicated moths ago there would be an August update of the docks firmware. This has not been released.

Has Dell acknowledged this as a known issue ?- there seems to be multiple posts with this same issue with other laptop models.

We were planning on purchasing this model for our fleet...

Dell, any comment?

at least the realtek 05/2020 driver changes settings for the Dell specific usb nic compared to the Dell usb nic 2019 driver:

DisableEEE, GreenEthDisabled and DisableIdlePowerSaving, DisableAdaptiveLinkSpeed

=> this must be related to the power saving issue

it could also help to increase the "hidden" power scheme setting "console lock display off timeout" to a high value in case the network issue occurs only while in windows lock screen.

Dell released a firmware update for the WD19 dock. I can't find anything related to the network dropouts in the release notes but perhaps it solved the problem?

Hello, mikelback -

Was just considering a purchase of this device to accompany my XPS 13 7390, but ongoing network dropouts would be a deal breaker.

Would be very interested to hear if the updated firmware (version ?) resolves the issue.

Thanks!

Are you sure you have:

- Monitor sleep turned off

Open the registry editor. If you don't know how, open search/Cortana and type regedit.

Using the folders on the left hand side, navigate to the following folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power on the right, one of the keys near the top should be called CsEnabled. Click on this.

Change the value of this key from 1 to 0

 - High performance energy profile selected

- Link state powermanagement disabled in energyprofile

Nope.

Ethernet drops ( while locked) after dock FW upgrade ....

Really annoying. I have 2 docks and both has the same ethernet network drop issues

I just tried the new WD19 firmware update and had mixed results. On some laptops it solved the problem but on others the problem remained.... these are fresh out of the box 7300's with the 1.6.1 BIOS. I applied the new 1.7.4 update, but it didn't help.

That new FW only mentions a fix for some "rare display issue"...

Dell - how bout you fix the non-so-rate ethernet issue!

Just installed latest GBE driver from Dell's site, and also the WD19's new firmware.

Didn't solve the problem. Ethernet dies in less than 1 hour. This is while I'm using the machine - not in sleep mode, etc.

Here are the details before flashing the WD19's firmware:

(MST means Multi-Stream Transport, and allows you to connect two screens)

Up to date GBE driver:

The usual error that occurs when the ethernet dies:

My Dell inspiron is runs on the "better battery" powermode, and I have an additional screen connected via DP.

I've not customized any power settings for green ethernet, etc. Will try that next.

I do have these two devices set to not allow to be turned off to save power. Obviously that didn't work.

One more observation:

When the enternet dies, the status LED on my switch still shows the link is active at 1GB speed.

If you then disconnect the dock's USB C cable from the laptop and re-connect it - it works fine again.

This seems to suggest the thing that dies is not the ethernet module in the dock itself, but rather the driver in windows...
