Looking for WD15 Firmware Update

Hello,

I have a Dell XP3 13 running Ubuntu 16.04 (kernel 4.6.4) connected to a WD15 docking station.

The WD15 works quite well except for the Ethernet connection. With Ethernet connected, the notebook freezes completely on occasion, forcing me to reboot.

So I went looking for firmware and driver updates. Dell offers some for Windows:

www.dell.com/.../drivers

but, unfortunately, not for Linux. Is there a chance I can get updates for Ubuntu?

any help is appreciated,

Peter

Magic.

Is that 130W or 180W dock you are using? I will probably purchase one, not sure which is the better option for 9360.

I would be interested as well. I am looking for a dock to support external monitor 2560 x 1440 at 60 Hz, bluetooth keyboard/mouse and audio via USB as well.

Ethernet port would be an advantage, however it seems to be a problem at the moment.

Could you please confirm that you have all these running on WD15? I got 9360 XPS with Ubuntu 16.04 just a few days back.

I'm using the docking station to drive two monitors (1920x1200) via DisplayPort. This works pretty well; there is some flickering after resume but it disappears soon, so it's only a minor annoyance...

USB audio and other USB peripherals work without problems.

Ethernet caused the notebook to freeze regularly, so I had to resort to WiFi.

I have used Bluetooth very little - it's not part of the docking station, anyway. I had some trouble connecting a Microsoft mouse, because its pairing got lost all the time.

I have the 130W dock. I figure it's sufficient to charge the notebook.

In the meantime, I went some lengths to install firmware updates.

(with a Windows system on an usb stick ...)

Now, the Ethernet connector behaves slightly more civilized.

After resume it does not connect at all ... but at least the notebook won't freeze :-\

+1 for question. It's very inconvenient that we need to find windows to update

Hi All,

Any chance to update the WD15 by Linux ?

Thank you so much!

All my best

Fully up-to-date firmware/bios on 9350, 9360, and WD15 (180W). Updating the WD15 was a pain because it required windows.

I don't put my laptops to sleep while connected to the WD15, and I've not tried to use the audio.

As long as I disable autosuspend on the realtek ethernet device (USB_BLACKLIST="0bda:8153" in /etc/default/tlp), I have no issues with the wired networking.

My external display is 2560x1440@60hz and works well via HDMI.

Things have been working well since the kernels 4.9 or later...

I don't know why this thread is marked as resolved?

Did anyone ever figure out how to update the firmware on the WD15 dock from Linux?

Best bet for updating the dock firmware is to do what this guy did:

https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-Developer-Systems/My-Good-Experience-with-XPS13-9360-and-WD15-Dock-and-Fedora-25/td-p/5130062

Native Linux support is coming, but I would guess probably still not until perhaps the year 2020.

On the plus side, this dock is working perfectly under Ubuntu Mate 18.04 with my XPS 13 9360.  I am running Linux kernel 4.20.0.
